Mead Brings No-Hit Stuff

Tyler Mead joins Biola Baseball after an excellent senior year on the mound for Leigh High School.

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Right-hander Tyler Mead's was on the pitcher's mound for some of Leigh High School's biggest moments in 2018. By the time Mead had finished his baseball season with the Longhorns, he had collected a no-hitter and a 2018 Hamilton League Co-Pitcher of the Year award. And that development from his junior year has made Head Coach Jay Sullenger very optimistic about what Mead can contribute as a Biola Eagle.

"Tyler is a hard working kid we saw at our camps,"said Sullenger. "He grew and developed into a young man that projects to get outs by staying ahead in the count and pounding the zone. He is a solid fit here at Biola and will be a great addition to our pitching staff and team."

Mead went 6-3 with a 2.30 ERA in 67 innings for the Longhorns in 2018, a major step up from the 16.1 innings he pitched as a junior. Mead mixed in five complete games during his starts this season, including three shutouts and a no-hitter against Santa Teresa on April 20. Mead struck out 10 batters during the no-no and went 2-for-6 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base.

Off the field, Mead is a worship leader at his church and directed his college search toward schools with a Christian foundation.

"I chose Biola because the school has an unwavering dedication to Christ," said Mead. "My dad went to Westmont College and my mom went to Azusa Pacific, but I chose the best of the three schools."

Mead plans to major in kinesiology during his time at Biola and hopes to have a career as a professional baseball player or as a physical trainer.

The Eagles are currently taking a well-deserved break after going 4-1 at the NCCAA World Series at the end of may. But Mead and the rest of the incoming recruits will join the baseball team in September for the start of classes and fall practice.
