LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- Biola University just finished off a very successful first season in the NCAA Division II and PacWest Conference. It was announced Wednesday that BU finished eighth in the PacWest Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2017-18 school year.

The Eagles were second following the fall season, third following winter and finish up eighth after all is said and done. The spring season was highlighted by a third-place finish from women's golf (11 pts) and fourth-place finish by baseball (10 pts). Biola is the only school in the PacWest to sponsor all conference sports and one of just two that sponsor all spring sports.

"To enter the PacWest Conference and make such a strong impact in the sports standings our first year is an incredible accomplishment," said Director of Athletics Dr. Bethany Miller.

Women's Golf moved up two spots in the standings during the final day of competition at its first PacWest Conference championship to secure more Commissioner's Cup points than any other Spring Biola program. Head Coach Jane Carr's team had a phenomenal season, also finishing second in the NCCAA National Championships.

"I am proud of our programs and the achievement in this inaugural year," said Miller. "We love being a PacWest Conference institution and a provisional member of NCAA Division II."

The baseball team won more than 30 games for the third consecutive season and score the second-most Commissioner's Cup points among Biola's spring sports. Their fourth-place finish allowed them to compete in the NCCAA postseason. Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team is the No. 1 overall seed at the NCCAA World Series, which begins play today.

BU has an average finish of 7.7667 points through the completion of the conference season. The points are awarded most to least based off conference finish. Then all scores are added up and divided by the total number of sports sponsored to come to the average, which determines the winner of the award. Biola is the only PacWest institution to sponsor all 14 countable sports. The Eagles accumulated the sixth-most total points (116.5). Volleyball (12.5) had the most points of a single program this year.

California Baptist won the award for the fifth year in a row. The Lancers and Dixie State (fifth) are both leaving the conference next year.

About the PacWest Commissioner's Cup
The PacWest Commissioner's Cup standings are updated three times a year following the fall, winter and spring seasons. The competition is based upon average finish instead of point totals, a change that occurred prior to the 2009-10 season. Each school's points are totaled and then divided by the number of PacWest athletic programs it offers, giving an overall average finish for the school.

The PacWest Commissioner's Cup Scoring System awards points to schools based on their finishes in conference-sponsored sports. Point totals vary from sport to sport and are based upon the number of schools competing. Regular-season standings are used for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, while the results of the conference championships in the sports of cross country, golf and tennis.

When teams are tied in the standings, the points awarded to those positions are added together then distributed evenly among the schools.
