Eagles Flourish At Finish

Biola wraps up another championship and three other All-American awards.

May 11, 2018

WINONA LAKE, Ind. --- It was a rainy, windy and busy final day of competition at the 2018 NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday. Biola earned one more individual national title and added three other All-American finishes to highlight the end of the meet.

Stephanie Croy secured 10 points for the team during the first track event of the day as she won the women's 3,000m steeplechase in a dominant performance. By the time the pack even reached the water barrier for the first time, Croy had about a 75-meter lead on the rest of the competition. That advantage led her to a 28-second victory and individual national championship. Her winning time was 11:31.74.

Corry Williams was on the track at the coldest, windiest time of day finishing off the second half of his decathlon. He had not individual event wins on this final day, but a second-place effort in the 110m hurdles (16.02) and third-place effort in the 1,500m (5:02.04) was good enough to land him third-place overall in the decathlon and make him a NCCAA All-American. Williams ended the decathlon with 5,827 points and gathered a few new PRs along the way.

The men and women's 1,500m race came next for the Eagles. Mackenna Mason scored points for the ladies by completing her run in 4:59.30 and finishing fifth overall. On the men's side, Ryan St. Pierre also managed to secure some points for the team with a sixth-place final time of 4:10.92.

Shannon Howell was the only female to compete in the 800m run for BU. She came away with three points for the squad in an effort of 2:24.92. Both Aditya Lal and Nic Nelson ran the men's 800m, with Lal recording the team's best finish with a 13th-place effort of 1:58.02.

The meet concluded with the Eagles' bread and butter, some good old distance running. Biola sent four women into the 5,000m, headlined by senior Stephanie Croy competing in her final collegiate race, while Gabe Plendcio was the only male in the event.

Croy, Emily Ransom and Jessica Cody all scored for Biola, but in the end it was yesterday's 10,000m national champion Crystal Jardines that finished highest. Jardines ended up with her second All-American honors of the meet, finishing second with a time of 18:11.09. This meet marked the first time in her Biola career that Jardines ran the 10k and 5k in the same meet.

Plendcio was pitted against a trio of Dallas Baptist runners all looking for NCAA Division II national championship qualifying times, so he knew he'd have to be on top of his game in order to keep up and compete. And he was just that, leading the race for five laps before ultimately finishing third overall to secure an All-American nod. Plendcio completed the course in 15:01 after splitting almost every one of his laps between 1:08 - 1:12. Plendcio's All-American 5k makes him a three-time NCCAA All-American this year - his championship in the cross country meet, today's 5k and yesterday's 4x800m relay.

Biola's women placed sixth (54pts) and men placed 12th (23pts), which are solid finishes considering less than half the team was here to compete and Biola only had one relay compete on each side.

This season is now in the books and we will turn our attention to Head Coach Sean Henning's recruiting class and the new cross country season ahead this fall. Thank you to all the seniors and your families for all your contributions to Biola.
