One Run Not Enough

Biola gets on the board first but is limited to just one run at California Baptist.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Everything was going according to the Eagles' preferred script through the first four-plus innings in Riverside. Biola had manufactured a run in the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead and was getting a strong start from Micah Beyer that was holding California Baptist in check. Things eventually went south as the Lancers earned a series win with a 3-1 win in the finale.

The Eagles even loaded the bases in the fifth inning with one out and their three and four hitters coming to the plate. But the tide of the game began to turn in that inning when Lancers' starter Andrew Bash struckout the final two hitters of the inning, strading three Eagles on the bases and opening the door for CBU to tie the game in the bottom half.

After Beyer had stranded three men in scoring position over his first four innings of work he nearly escaped the fifth in similar fashion after Ryan Williams hit a one-out double.

Beyer struckout the next batter on four pitches and threw a first-pitch strike to leadoff hitter Luke Navigato with two out. But Navigato was able to thread the ball through the left side for a single that scored Williams from second base and even the score.

With one out left for Beyer to get in the bottom of the sixth it appeared the score might stay at 1-1 late into the game. Biola's ace had struckout his seventh and eighth victims of the day in the Lancers' three and four hitters to begin the inning. Then he was ahead 2-2 on outfielder Tommy Bell before CBU's batter hit his fourth homerun of the season to give his team a slim lead.

By that time the Eagles had chased California Baptist starter Andrew Bash after his pitch count rose to 97 pitches in 5.1 innings. But reliever Logan Reinhart only surrendered one hit to Biola after CBU had taken the lead.

Reinhart allowed a single to Ryan Gallegos with two outs in the eighth but Gallegos would not advance any farther. The Lancers would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Bash solo shot and Reinhart would retire the side in the ninth to complete 3.2 innings of scoreless work and get the win.

Beyer gets the tough luck loss after striking out 10 Lancers in seven inning and allowing just five hits. It was Beyer's seventh-straight outing of at least seven innings and his third in a row with double-digit strikeouts.

He remains the PacWest leader in strikeouts with 74 as the Eagles drop to 21-13 and 13-11 in conference play.

Biola will look to rebound when it returns to La Mirada for a four-game set against Holy Names University next week. Game one is scheduled for Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
