SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- No matter where Aysia Johnson goes, her work-ethic and competitiveness invariably follow.
The San Diego, California native is coming off of a Victory League MVP award that she earned at Desert Christian Academy in 2018 and has spent time on the same Cal Sparks club team that forward Jazz Benn played on before she came to Biola.
Now as Johnson transitions to basketball at the collegiate level, she has set her sights on working toward a new goal: winning a PacWest title.
"During the high school season Aysia had a break-out year," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "This season Desert Christian Academy set records, and Aysia's competitiveness and quiet determination were major factors. Recently she played in two All-Star games, and was named MVP in both."
Johnson played her first three seasons of varsity basketball at Horizon Christian Academy, where she averaged about 7.5 points per game as the Panthers captain during her junior season. When Horison Christian Academy closed before her senior year, Johnson transferred to Desert Christian Academy and blossomed.
Johnson was already being considered one of the best players in the Coachella Valley when was named Student Athlete of the Week by local television station KESQ in a January release. And as she continued to excel, Johnson helped the Conquerors to an undefeated leagued record and a 28-4 record overall, averaging 21 points, over five assists and 5.6 steals per game.
That earned her league MVP honors and an appearance on the All-CIF Southern Section First Team at the 5AAA level. Â
"Aysia welcomes opportunities to get better and is willing to put in long hours," said Nakamura. "She's a godly young lady, a 4.0 student, comes from a close-knit, high-achieving family, and leads by example on and off the court. We are thankful to add Aysia to our program!"
Johnson plans to major in finance when she enrolls at Biola and decided to join the Eagles because of Biola's "outstanding academics and spiritual atmosphere."
