Two Times The Fun

Biola Track & Field had another weekend with multiple meets.

April 14, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a weekend filled with two very different meets for Biola Track & Field. The Eagles began on Friday at the Cerritos Invitational, which was a field of all junior colleges and then Biola. Then on Saturday the team traveled down the 5-freeway to compete at the UC San Diego Invitational, which featured NCAA Division I and International competition.

There were accomplishments to be pleased with at both meets, including quite a few top-5 finishes at Cerritos and a handful of personal-bests on a quick day down in San Diego.

Anna Maumalanga made the strongest impression at Friday's meet. The freshman won the discus toss and bettered her school record in that event with a heave of 42.48m.

Robbie Gleeson posted the best finish on the men's side as he placed second in the 800m race with a 1:57.68. He would also make the trip down to San Diego the following day and compete in that race again. Kaitlyn Natividad placed third overall in the women's version of the 800m. She ran the race in 2:22 flat, which was just hundredths of a second off her career best.

Paige LaBare had herself a busy weekend as she also competed at Cerritos and in the Saturday meet. She was fourth overall in the 100m at the first meet with a :12.50. Then she lowered that time to :12.33 and beat eight NCAA Division I runners to finish 15th overall in the same event on Saturday.

Corry Williams had himself a great day to start us highlighting Saturday's best performances. The sophomore had Biola's best finish in the long jump with a personal-best of 5.90m and he also led the Eagles in the 400m with another personal best (by over three seconds) of :52.76.

Mandy Reyes had the best overall finish for BU on Saturday. She finished second overall in the women's 3,000m run. The sophomore completed the race in 10:26, which was 29 seconds faster than her previous collegiate-best. The 3k was a good event for the Eagles, with Kailin Quaid, Kaili Waller and Taylor Lawsen all also finishing in the top-20.

Gabe Plendcio was the other Eagle to log a top-5 finish in San Diego. He placed fifth in a competitive 5k and once again lowered his personal-best time, this time with a 14:42. That was a 15-second improvement over his previous best. Ryan St. Pierre was not too far behind him in the event, placing 12th and also setting a new top time with his 14:58.

Stephanie Croy led Biola's effort in the 1,500m and the 800m. She was 19th overall in the 1,500m, leading a group of Crystal Jardines, Emily Ransom and Natividad. Croy finished with a 4:45 and the other three were all within five seconds of her.

Croy, a senior, set a new collegiate-best in the 800m with a 2:18. She improved her top time by three seconds and again had a group of teammates finishing within close reach. Hannah Hunsaker crossed the line second for BU and Melissa Ledesma came across third with her own personal-best of 2:28.

Nathaniel Belden managed a strong finish in a much shorter event. The sophomore set a personal-best in the 110m hurdles with a :15.63 to finish 16th overall. James Finch and Micah Hickerson all finished within a second of him to place 19th and 20th.

Next week is even busier for this team as they will compete at three different meets during the final weekend of the regular season. Over the course of Thursday through Saturday the Eagles compete in Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Invitational and the Long Beach State Beach Invitational.
