Grand Slam Sparks Win

Eagles earn their seventh PacWest win with 7-1 game one win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola got five scoreless innings from Terri Van Dagens and a grand slam from Areana Ramos to lift it to a 7-1 win over Dominican in game one of Thursday's home doubleheader.

The Eagles took the lead in the second inning when Ramos singled, advanced on a wild pitch and got knocked in by a Kayla Neff single. A second run crossed the plate later in the inning when a two-our two-bagger from Andi Hormel drove in Missy Poti.

After that offense Van Dagens and the Penguins' starter traded zeroes for the next few innings until the Eagles finally broke the game open in the fifth.

The big hit of that fifth inning was Ramos' grand slam. It was the first fair fly ball Biola managed off of the Dominican starter, who spun the ball so well a majority of the Eagles' contact never left the infield.

Ramos clobbered it just right though as it cleared the left-center field fence and nearly touched down in the archery range. That hit made it a 7-0 game and set Biola up well to potentially end the game via the run rule.

Dominican got out of a bases loaded situation in the sixth inning to force the game to go the full distance and head to their bats in the seventh staring at that 7-0 margin. The Penguins managed to load the bases themselves before Biola could get the first out of that seventh inning, making the Eagles begin to sweat just a bit.

The visitors managed one run out of that situation before a heads-up play from Selina Sherlin at third base sparked a game-ending 5-2-3 double play.

Van Dagens improved to 8-1 with the win and dropped her ERA down to 0.86 for the season.

The win brought Biola's season record to 20-5, which ties their win total (20-21-2) from a year ago. The Eagles are now 7-2 in PacWest play, while the Penguins fall to 2-7.
