Eagles End It Early

Biola gets another run-rule win by blanking Dominican, 9-0.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After dropping seven runs, including a grand slam, in game one, the Biola Softball offense did not slow down one bit in the second game against Dominican, ending things early with a five-inning 9-0 run-rule win.

The victory is Biola's 8th in PacWest Conference play. The Eagles are the first team in the conference to hit that plateau. They are still not listed first in the conference though, as three teams are still undefeated (CBU, DSU, UHH).

Biola improved to 14-1 on the season in game where it scores the first run in the contest. The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a single run as a Hailey Boyett double scored Ruth Munoz all the way from first base.

Dominican got through the second inning with a walk being the only offense for BU, but the third and fourth innings were not as kind as Biola built up its mercy rule run differential with three in the third and five in the fourth before Kaile Chavez entered the game and slammed the door in the top of the fifth.

Chavez through one perfect inning of relief after Paula Damas got the start and threw four scoreless frames. Damas earned her second victory of the season while allowing just four hits to the Penguins offense while her own offense lit up the scoreboard.

The third inning runs were sparked by a stretch of 10 consecutive balls thrown by the Dominican pitcher. She walked Munoz and Boyett back to back with one out already in the inning. The second out came on a successful Selina Sherlin sacrifice fly that increased the lead to 2-0. After that, with Boyett standing on second base, Areana Ramos hit her second homerun of the day, this one going the opposite way, to blow the game up to a 5-0 lead.

That would be all for BU in that frame, but after Damas worked around two base runners in the top of the fourth the Eagles came up to bat and put the game out of reach.

A pair of Dominican errors allowed Biola to have runners on second and third with just one out for Jay Perez. Perez came through with a double to clear the bases and have the Eagles start to think of reaching that eight-run plateau.

A Boyett single made that goal even more attainable as it was now 7-0 after Perez crossed the plate. Sherlin singled to put two runners on before the final blow came in the form of a two-out, two-run double from the hero of the day, Ramos.

She got the score up to 9-0 while picking up her seventh and eighth RBI of the day. Ramos now leads the team with 26 RBI on the season. She sits two in from Boyett, who came into the day with the lead and added two of her own.

The Eagles have now won four in a row and 17 of their last 21 ball games. Freedom Field has been the friendly confines too, as they see their home record climb to 11-2 with 16 more home contests left on the schedule.

Biola sits at 21-5 overall and 8-2 in the PacWest Conference, while Dominican falls to 0-6 on its SoCal road trip and drops to 6-16 (2-8 PacWest).

Biola will play its fifth and sixth games of the week Friday night at Freedom Field as they host Holy Names (1-12, 1-5 PWC) at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
