Cougars Stay Perfect

Biola nearly gets one win in each session, but falls 9-0 to APU

March 23, 2018

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis had a chance to spoil what's been a perfect season for No. 14 Azusa Pacific on Friday, but the Eagles could not overcome the power of the now 16-0 Cougars and dropped the match, 9-0.

The Eagles nearly took No. 2 doubles off APU as Philip Westwood and Quentin Lau had another great day playing together. The pair had won three consecutive matches together before dropping this one, 8-7.

The No. 1 team of Derek James and Joe Turnquist had to go up NCAA Division II's No. 1 ranked doubles pairing in Christian Schmid and Oliver Frank. The Eagles managed to take one game off that pair, but that was it in an 8-1 loss.

Singles went much the same way a doubles, with a few of the sets being played tight, but almost all ending in straight-set victories for the hosting Cougars.

Logan Blair managed to take the first set at No. 5 singles (6-4), before ultimately dropping the match in a tiebreaker to Azusa Pacific senior Alan Leahy in the final match to finish up. The tiebreaker was about as close as it could be with Leahy winning 10-8.

The loss drops Biola to 3-9 overall. The team will have its chance to bounce back when it begins a four-match homestand next Monday against Hawai'i Hilo.
