Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Eagles Upend Seawolves

Biola Men's Tennis gets a statement win over Sonoma State.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second match in a row Biola Men's Tennis took it down to the very last possible set before its match with Sonoma State was decided. This time it all fell in favor of the Eagles as Lucas Lee earned a 6-4 third set win in the No. 3 singles match to lock up a 5-4 win.

It is a highlight win for the program as Sonoma State came into the day with an 8-2 record as one of the best teams in the west region. The win was even more uplifting for the team because the Eagles transitioned into the singles portion of the match down 2-1 after doubles.

Aside from Lee's massive three-set win, Quentin Lau was a major highlight for the Eagles during the victory. He's the only Eagle to earn a win in singles and doubles by pairing with Philip Westwood for an 8-4 win at two doubles and then winning 6-4; 6-2 to lock up No. 6 singles.

The freshman now has an overall winning record in singles (6-5) and doubles (7-4) this season.

After Sonoma State earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles th eEagles had extra work cut out for them as the match moved into singles. Lau won quickly, but the Eagles suffered two straight-set losses that had the match swinging in the balance at 4-2 Sonoma State as three singles matches headed to three sets.

In addition to Lee's match at No. 3, Derek James (No. 2) and Logan Blair (No. 5) also split sets one and two of their matches to force third sets.

James finished first by bouncing back in set three with a 6-4 win after suffering a 6-1 defeat in his second frame. Then Blair earned his win to tie the match and set all eyes on Lee on court three. It was Blair's second consecutive three-set match and fifth of the season. It was his first three-set win. He did it in thrilling fashion too, winning the second and third sets after a 6-4 first set loss. The match was about as close as it could get with all three sets decided by two games (4-6; 7-5; 6-4).

Lee's clinching victory was also a trio of two-game wins. He took set one, 6-4, his opponent took the second set, 6-4 and then Lee knuckled down to win the decisive set in front of an audience that included every single person at the Biola Tennis Center.

The Eagles improve to 3-8 with the victory and it becomes their first win over a PacWest Conference team. The Seawolves are an affiliate member of the PWC in tennis.
