Eagles Provide Late Splash

Biola gets the majority of its runs in the final three innings to defeat Saint Katherine, 9-7.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles came out on top in a contentious battle between two teams ranked in the top-four of the NCCAA National Rankings with a 9-7 win on Tuesday.

The University of Saint Katherine Firebirds erased Biola's early 3-1 in the third inning and went on to build a four-run advantage by the seventh inning stretch. But the Eagle finally got to Firebirds reliever James Ryan in the bottom of the seventh and catapulted themselves to victory with six runs in the final two innings.

Biola now carries a five-game winning streak as it returns to PacWest play in Fresno this weekend and is 10 games over .500 at 14-4. Saint Katherine falls to a record of 20-10 after winning seven of its last nine.

The Eagles scored in the first inning for the sixth time this season by bringing three across in their first at-bats to take a two-run lead. Brandon Cody tied the game at 1-1 after he reached on a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Then fellow freshman Ryan Gallegos continued his torrid hitting by belting a double to left that scored two runs.

Gallegos collected base hits in his first two at-bats on Tuesday to complete a stretch where he got six-straight hits dating back to the Eagles win over Vanguard on Mar. 6. The Scotts Valley, California native hit a massive two-run homerun later in the seventh inning to make it a 7-6 game in favor of the visitors. The homerun resulted in Gallegos' third and fourth RBI's of the game and finished off a 3-for-5 day.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's lineup was able to chase starting pitcher Dallas Litscher after just two-thirds of an inning. But they could not find the same success against Ryan, who held the Eagles scoreless from the second through the sixth inning. Saint Katherine's righty did not allow surrender a hit for three innings beginning in the fourth. But Biola was finally able to string together in the seventh after Jerron Largusa kicked things off with a single.

Largusa's knocked pushed his hitting streak to 11-straight games and scored Joey Magro after Magro doubled with one out. The Eagles went on to register a cycle in the inning as River Fawley followed Gallegos' aforementioned homerun with a game-tying triple to right against the Firebirds pitcher that replaced James Ryan.

The lead would officially change hands two batter later when Fawley scored on a wild pitch. Then Colton Worthington added an insurance run with a solo shot to deep center in the eighth to make it 9-7.

Those two runs would be all closer Daniel Jang would need to wrap up his seventh save of the season. Two flyouts and strikeout took care of the inning on 17 pitches without much fanfare and sealed the victory.

The Eagles will take a travel day on Wednesday to travel to Fresno in preparation for a four-game series with Fresno Pacific. The teams have agreed to play a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 12 noon and hope that the rain will allow them to play a single game on Friday and Saturday.
