Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Talmanated

Alex Talma goes off for his second-straight double-double in BU's double-digit win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Riding on the strength of an outstanding final eight minutes, Biola Men's Basketball dismissed Holy Names 84-64 to win its fourth PacWest Conference contest in its last five times out.

"I think that previous to this recent stretch we had good games, but we just lost them all," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "We've been getting better, but we've also been getting the rewards for the effort."

Biola trailed 37-36 at halftime, but came out of the gate with back-to-back Blake Shannon, Jr. triples to jump out in front. The game continued to sway back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes or so of half two before the Holy Names shooting effort went ice cold and Biola's rebounders ratcheted up the intensity.

Biola outscored the Hawks 25-6 over the final 10 minutes of play and out-rebounded them 14-5 over that same stretch to limit any second chances at offense for the visitors. For the game the Eagles had a 41-28 rebounding advantage, powered largely by the 12 from one Alex Talma.

Talma had another fantastic outing, ending with his second-straight double-double and leading the team in scoring. He had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Eight of his points came at the foul line as he was a master at drawing fouls under the basket on this night. The other Eagles combined for just four total free throw attempts.

The Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor tonight, which is their best finish since they went for 52 percent at Azusa Pacific back at the very beginning of January. It's one of seven times this season they've made at least half of their shots.

Tonight was the sixth time this season, but first since Nov. 22, Biola was able to shoot over 50 percent from beyond the arc. The team made 13 three-pointers, second to the other-worldly 17 made against Life Pacific in November, led by three a piece from Talma, Trevor Treinen and Blake Shannon, Jr.

Shannon's three threes were his only points of the night, but he tied his season-best with 11 assists. A handful of those went to freshman Michael Bagatourian who had one of his best performances of the season, mostly in the second half. Bagatourian shot 5-of-9 with a pair of free throws and a block, ending with 12 points in 20 minutes. All of his points and rebounds were over the final 20 minutes of the game.

"Michael gave us a big lift tonight," said Holmquist. "He played some of his best defense of the year and some of his best basketball of the year."

Even though the game was close until relatively late the team played with a level of confidence that made it seem as if the game was never once in doubt. They never trailed by more than four points and seem to be moving full speed ahead towards a difficult matchup scheduled for Saturday.

The Eagles play at California Baptist's sparkling new 5,050 seat Event Center on what is their homecoming week. The game is set to tip-off just after 7:00 p.m. and will actually be televised live on Fox Sports Prime Ticket. Find ticket information at this link.

"They are a very good team. I thought we played well against them when we played here and we still lost by 17, so they are very talented," said Holmquist. "We'll just do the best we can to prepare well and see what happens."

Biola's recent good run has them out of last place in the conference with a chance to finish as high as sixth place if they can win out and get some help. They're currently in 12th at 10-13 (4-11 PacWest), two games ahead of last place and just one game out of 10th in the loss column. CBU is battling for the conference title, sitting one game out at 18-4 (11-3 PacWest).
