Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- The good times keep on rolling during Biola Softball's Hawaiian road trip. The Eagles improved to 3-0 to start PacWest Conference play with a 12-0 run-rule victory over the Chaminade Silverswords in game one of two on Tuesday night.
The Eagles got a complete game shutout victory out of Terri Van Dagens, who pitched her longest outing of the 2018 season (six innings) and was stellar start to finish. The offense was a steady drip early, scoring one run in the first, one run in the second, two runs in the fifth and then exploding for an eight-spot in the sixth to force Chaminade's hand in the bottom half of that inning.
There were two critical moments in that top half of the sixth. The first was a two-out misplay by the Silverswords that allowed the eighth run of the game to score and extended the inning. The Chaminade pitcher induced a weakly hit ground ball that should've ended the inning and kept the game from reaching run-rule territory, but the Silverswords' defense forgot there was two outs, threw to the wrong base and allowed that eighth run to score.
Two batters later the game was blown wide open when Hailey Boyett crushed her fifth homerun of the season, a three-run shot, to bring the game to its final resting place of 12-0.
Van Dagens allowed one runner to reach second base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the run-rule finish was never once in doubt as she got two groundouts and a big swinging strikeout to end the game. The senior improves to 5-0 on the season and sees her ERA drop back down to right around 1.00. She had five strikeouts, no walks and allowed only four hits in the game.
Biola's offensive effort was paced by three-hit games by Jay Perez, Ruth Munoz and Boyett. Boyett and Perez both homered, and Perez hit a run-scoring triple that put her in the lead in the PacWest Conference with her third three-bagger of the season. Munoz had three singles, drove in two runs, stole a base and scored twice herself.
The victory leaves Biola all alone in first place in the conference standings as they become the first team with three victories. The Eagles have now won 10 in a row and have improved their overall record to 14-3.
These two have one more meeting this season, which will begin at just about 9:15 p.m. PT tonight. Follow the game with live audio at this link and live stats
