Make It Two!

Biola begins Cactus Classic 2-0 with 4-0 win over LCU.

TUCSON, Arizona --- The rain delays and schedule uncertainty does not seem to be impacting Biola Softball at all. The Eagles have been sharp through their first two outings at the 2018 Cactus Classic, picking up another win in game two with a 4-0 victory over Lubbock Christian.

Biola won the game despite going into the fifth inning before recording its first hit of the ballgame. This is thanks to another great start by Terri Van Dagens and some opportune offense early in the game.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jay Perez reached on error and later scored on a Ruth Munoz groundout.

That was the only scoring in the game until the fifth inning rolled around. Both starting pitchers were fantastic, with Van Dagens going four scoreless before handing the ball to Paige Austin. Clarissa Martinez was the starter for the Chaps. She began the game with four no-hit innings despite not striking out a single Eagle.

The wheels fell off a bit for Martinez in the fifth as Biola managed to scrape together two runs on the merit of a Selina Sherlin two-RBI single. That hit scored Munoz and Perez, who continue to play a big role in the Eagles' offense to start this season.

After inducing two strikeouts and a popup to work around a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth, Austin pushed the pressure back to the Biola hitters to expand the lead.

They came through.

Andi Hormel led off that bottom of the sixth with a double and eventually worked her way home off a LCU miscue. That pushed the lead to 4-0, which became really important in the top half of the seventh.

Lubbock Christian was not looking to go down without a fight and managed to load the bases in that seventh inning, sending the tying run up to the plate with two outs. Austin worked two quick strikes on the batter, who then fouled one off, took a ball and finally swung and missed to get Austin her fourth strikeout and end the contest.

The win is a nice indicator of Biola's standing in the PacWest Conference as LCU played conference favorite No. 9 Dixie State immediately before this game and lost, 8-0.

Biola has now won three of its last four ball games and improves to 6-3 on the season. The Chaps have lost two straight and fall to 5-3.

The Eagles have one more game scheduled for Saturday. They close out the Cactus Classic with a 5:00 p.m. PT contest against Western Oregon (6-5).
