SOUTH GATE, Calif. --- It was a strong start to the 2018 Collegiate Winter Invite on Friday, as after one full day of competition Biola Swim & Dive sits first (men) and third (women) in the team standings. The Eagles also saw a new school record set! Nicole Chang swam lead-off in the Eagles' winning 400-medley relay and recorded a :57.67 to break Rachel Stinchcomb's 2016 100-backstroke record.

Both teams won the 400-medley relay to score 64 points and receive a big boost. The women's 'A' team of Chang, Emily Silzel, Stinchcomb and Kasidee Pascoe went 3:55.45 to finish ahead of second-place Azusa Pacific and all the 19 other teams in the event. The men's 'A' team consisted of Clayton Owens, Raymond Kam, Jonathan Villa and Westin Dawe and they went 3:35.73 to win the event by eight whole seconds.

The other relay of the day was the 200-freestyle relay, where both teams also experienced success, finishing fourth.

The 200-IM was a marquee event on the women's side as Rachel Stinchcomb (2:09.95) took fourth and Katelyn Penner (2:10.31) fifth in the finals. Another top women's finish was Emily Silzel's in the opening individual event, the women's 500-freestyle. She took fourth with a 5:09.69.

Similar to the Stinchcomb/Penner IM finish, the men had an event with two swimmers in the top-5. Owens (4:50.64) and Villa (4:50.92) finished fourth and fifth in the men's 500-free to add to their already successful days.

Raymond Kam and one of two individual podium finishes for Biola on Friday. The junior took second in the 200-IM with a 1:59.03. He was just .06 seconds behind the race winner from Chapman.

The other top finish was from Matthew Roe, who finished third in the 50-freestyle field with a :22.06. He and Kam's performances combined to earn BU 55 points.

The Eagles' men's team leads the field of five team with 459 total points. Their closest competition after day one is La Verne (398). The women racked up 402 total points and sit third in the field of eight teams. The Eagles are 47 points ahead of fourth-place Azusa Pacific.

Competition continues on Saturday with 10 a.m. prelims and 5 p.m. finals.
