LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Keep an eye on your television set over Thanksgiving Break, because there will be a Biolan to watch, airing on NBC and NBC Sports Network as part of Milk Life presents, Scouting Camp: The Next Olympic Hopeful.

Biola Track & Field newcomer Jonathan Newsome (multi-events), was selected to participate the USA Track & Field Olympic Scouting Camp back in July of this year at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The show chronicling the efforts of Newsome and nearly 90 other Olympic hopefuls will air at 6 p.m. PT on NBC Sports Network on Saturday, Nov. 24 and at noon on NBC on Sunday, Nov. 25

Biola's newest decathlete was one of 42 male finalists chosen to train with Carlin Isles, "the world's fastest rugby player", who was once a USA Track & Field hopeful with a 100m personal-best of 10.13 seconds.

"It was really cool to talk with him and pick his brain about running in general," said Newsome. "He gave me some good advice on how to increase my speed and how to strike the ground."

Newsome first got involved with the Olympic Scouting Camp because his father works out at a crossfit gym owned by three-time Olympian Tom Pappas. Newsome picked the brain of the 2003 decathlon world champion who encouraged him to pursue the opportunity.

He was one of around 4,000 athletes to apply for the opportunity to compete and train at the Olympic Scouting camp and found out in mid-July that he had been selected as a finalist.

Newsome was flown out to Colorado, stayed in Olympic housing and was hooked up with a bunch of Team USA swag to train in and keep.

All of the athletes attending the camp were put through a bunch of fitness tests, similar to any scouting combine, testing speed, strength, lifts, etc. Newsome was the youngest male competitor selected as a finalist. He was going toe-to-toe with some athletes who had recently finished top-5 in the NCAA Division I Track & Field championships.

"This is a good start in terms of putting my name out there and showing what I can do at this point," said Newsome.

Newsome described the feeling he got when he first walked into the Olympic Training Center. It was surreal. It was TEAM USA plastered everywhere, reminding Newsome and all the athletes of why they are there and to make the most of it.

"It hit me," said Newsome. "This is where all these amazing record-holders were training and living and I am here. I'm competing."

Before Biola, Newsome was a standout hurdler at South Eugene High School in Eugene, Ore. He had NCAA Division I aspirations, but injuries and other circumstances led to his arrival here on campus this fall.

"I began looking at other places, and that's when Biola popped up," said Newsome. "As soon as I visited, I knew this was where I wanted to go. I love my team and I'm very excited about working with coach Mickey (Miela). At Biola, we have a great Christian community that supports athletics in a way that a lot of schools don't. I really value that."
