Five Times The Fun

Biola swimmers were pushed hard on Saturday, each swimming five individual events.

October 06, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Day two of the Biola Swim & Dive season saw the focus shift from relay team performance to strictly individual performances. It was the annual Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference pentathlon meet.

It was tough to score too many points at the meet with NCAA Division I heavyweight California Baptist present and taking up a lot of the top spots, but the Eagles' men managed 28 points to finish third and the women got 57.5 to place sixth. The Eagles' combined tally of 85.5 is the fifth-most of all the teams present.

The meet featured 26 different swimming events, 13 for each gender, and also had one-meter and three-meter diving. Biola had a diver in the field for the men's one-meter. Caleb Andrews finished fifth individually.

Emily Silzel was the Eagles' top performer on the day, finishing 11th or higher in all five of her events as part of the freestyle pentathlon. Her best finish was a second-place mark in the 100-freestyle (:54.03). She finished just four-hundredths of a second behind the race winner from Concordia Irvine.

A highlight of the day for Silzel was when she swam her 500-free (6th - 5:15.72) and her sister, Faith, a freshman at Concordia, was able to do her lap counting. That 500 was one of four top-10 finishes for the speedy junior. She led the effort for BU as the Eagles' swimmers accounted for 19 total top-10 finishes. Twenty if you count the diving.

Raymond Kam led the men's side with three individual top-10 finishes. The junior standout (and Biola record holder) finished fifth in the 100-breaststroke (1:00.66), sixth in the 100-butterfly (:53.02) and ninth in the 200-IM (2:03.84).

Freshman Katelyn Harper turned some heads with some good swims on Saturday. She accounted for two of the Eagles' top-10 swims, finishing fifth in the 200-IM (2:14.41) and seventh in the 100-butterfly (1:00.13) as part of the distance medley pentathlon.

On the men's side it was Jonathan Villa who was recording top finishes in his first individual swims as a Biola Eagle. Villa's best finish of the day came in the 500-freestyle, where he led Biola with a 4:57.06 to finish ninth overall. He also managed to crack the top-10 with a 10th-place finish in the 200-freestyle (1:49.62).

Clayton Owens also had some good marks while swimming the men's freestyle pentathlon. He finished inside the top-15 in three of the five events, with his best mark being a ninth-place finish in the 200-freestyle (1:49.48), where he very narrowly edged his teammate, Villa.

Finally, Rachel Stinchcomb was her typical consistent self in the women's distance medley pentathlon. She had her highest finish in the 100-backstroke of course (6th - 1:01.48), but also managed to place ninth in the 200-IM (2:15.68), 10th in the 100-butterfly (1:00.92) and 12th in the 100-breaststroke (1:12.33) in a great day.

Stinchcomb and Katelyn Harper both finished top-10 in the total pentathlon scoring. Stinchcomb's total time of 6:28.08 had her sixth among the distance medley pentathlon swimmers. Harper's total time of 6:30.03 was good enough for ninth. Raymond Kam finished sixth in the men's medley pentathlon with a total time of 5:49.71. Silzel was the day's highest finisher, placing fifth in the women's freestyle pentathlon with a total time of 8:43.71.

The Eagles' are next in action at the Whittier College triple-distance meet on Saturday, October 20.
