LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Swim & Dive opened up its second NCAA Division II season with the always entertaining Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference relay meet. Biola's two teams combined for the second-most total points on a strong day.

The men's side placed second, scoring 78 points. The women finished the day fourth, scoring 51. They edged Azusa Pacific by three points.

This relay meet is definitely unorthodox in nature, with just four of the 12 events being real relays that are swam on a consistent basis. Biola had swimmers in 23 of the 24 total events on Friday, and experienced five event wins.

The closest race of the day came in the men's 400-yard medley relay, where the team of Matthew Roe, Jonathan Villa, Raymond Kam and Westin Dawe out-touched their opponents from Concordia Irvine by just 19-hundredths of a second. Biola won the event with a time of 3:42.30.

The men's team also won the 500-yard freestyle relay that is similar to a track & field distance medley relay, where all four swimmers swim different lengths to add up to 500 yards. The Eagles' team of Eric Nimmo, Caleb Stupin, Dawe and Andrew Holmes swam that in 4:31.72 to beat Concordia by about five seconds.

The women's side had a nearly as narrow victory in the 3x100-yard breaststroke relay. Celine Dong, Jenny London and Emily Silzel each swam their 100-yards and combined for a 3:32.05 to edge the meet champions, CSU East Bay, by 44-hundredths of a second. It was Dong's first meet for BU.

The men won the backstroke and butterfly 3x100-yard relays with Clayton Owens, Roe and Jake Allen combining for a convincing win in the first and Kam, Holmes and Villa combining to complete the butterfly race in 2:43.21 for a big win.

The women's field was larger than the men's, so second and third-place finishes are definitely notable for the ladies. In addition to the win in the breaststroke relay, the Eagles had top-3 finishes in three other events.

Annie Bristow made her presence known right away in her first meet as an Eagle. She was on all three of the top-3 relays for BU. Her co-newcomers Faith McAllister and Kasidee Pascoe were also involved in several of the team's top finishes.

This first day of competition is really a lead-in to a busy Saturday of competition, where all swimmers with have the chance to compete in five individual events at the annual PCSC Pentathlon.
