No. 8 Cougars Slip Past Biola

Azusa Pacific found a late goal in a defensive tussle with Biola to take 10 Cornerstone Cup points.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Men's Soccer team stepped up to the challenge of playing against the conference's top team in the No. 8 Azusa Pacific Cougars on Saturday.

Biola's defense restricted the Cougars' high-caliber offense to just one shot on goal and five total shots in the match but some empty space at the top of the penalty area in the 78th minute allowed Arturo Astorga to drill the ball past the goal line to score the only goal of the match for APU.

With the tie in the women's match later Saturday evening, Azusa Pacific takes a 10-point lead in the Cornerstone Cup race, 20-10. Biola had taken 10 points from the men's match last year and was on a two-match winning streak against Azusa Pacific coming into the match.

The Eagles proved they were ready to keep up with the Cougars for the long haul when they fended off four corners in a nine-minute span from the 11th minute to the 20th. The four corner kicks would be the Cougars' best chances at a goal in the first half as they only mustered two shots. But Eagles like Jake Munivez and Atu Galadima made successful attempts to head away all four inswingers and diffuse the threat. The Eagles had yet to ask keeper Luis Rodriguez for a save by the time they headed off the pitch for the halftime break.

Play continued to be physical, but not chippy, when play resumed in the second half. Eagles like Kousei Mattox and Ahkigbe Unuigbe found themselves on the turf on a regular basis during the latter 45 minutes particularly, but their effort ended up being worth the trial because both players drew the frustration of the Cougars' side for their ability to clear the ball.

Unfortunately, Azusa Pacific was finally able to break through with just over 10 minutes left on a run down the right sideline. Justin Glaser completed the run by finding Astorga's feet at the top-right corner of the penalty area to set Astorga up for a few touches to his left and a clear shot at goal.

Atu Galadima provided the Eagles' best chances in the final minutes and nearly tied the match had it not been for a diving punch from Cougars' goalie Brendan Fix. Galadima skied to head a forward ball for Biola and directed it perfectly toward the space around the left post. As it floated toward frame, Fix took two strides back and was just able to palm the ball away at full arms length to literally save the game for APU.

Astorga's and Galadima's chances would be the only shots on goal of the match.

Biola turns around very quickly for its next match, traveling to San Diego to face Point Loma at 1 p.m.
