Scoreless In San Diego

Biola gave the Sea Lions a run for their money in a Monday road match but couldn’t find a goal in overtime.

SAN DIEGO --- The Biola Eagles put a damper on the Point Loma Nazarene University offense for 110 minutes on Monday, to three shots-on-goal while holding them scoreless on the Sea Lions' senior day.

Biola's success in keeping the ball out of their defensive-third all match long set the stage for the Eagles to exact a bit of revenge on Point Loma after the Sea Lions spoiled a senior day celebration at Al Barbour Field last year. But four shots-on-goal over the last 30 minutes of play and a massive push in the final 10 minutes could not produce a goal in the scoreless 0-0 tie.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team remains over .500 in conference play at 4-4-1 with two matches to play. The single point holds Point Loma's spot in third place in the PacWest with 20 points.

Motivated to flip the script after a 4-0 non-conference loss to PLNU in September, the Eagles found a soft spot in the home team's defense down the left sideline nearly immediately and unleashed the speedy Oscar Rubalcava down the space again and again during the match. As a result of Rubalcava's speed upfield, sending the ball to the left corner was almost always on for Biola and the Eagles created eight corners in the match as a result.

Unfortunately, the Sea Lions' defense always seemed to step to the ball and get in the way just as the Eagles were ambushing the penalty area. Until the second overtime, Biola had mostly 50-50 balls to work with in the attacking third, save for a small opening on the left corner of the six-yard area for Leo Thompson in the 87th minute that forced Wiktor Lasota to make a diving save to his left when Thompson tried to poke the ball toward the far post.

After the Eagles ended the first overtime with another test on Lasota from Atu Galadima, Biola's offense crashed on the Point Loma penalty area and created multiple scoring opportunities that were initiated by Rubalcava, Jack MacDonald, and others. Biola's last chance came on two set pieces from Kousei Mattox that even brought keeper Luis Rodriguez into the box. But the ball would not get past Point Loma and the match ended without a goal.

The Eagles will play the final two matches of the regular season at home. First up is a match with Holy Names on Thursday and kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
