Extra Points Even Cornerstone Cup

Biola suffers two tough set losses in extra point to give APU win.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola and Azusa Pacific Volleyball once again pulled out all the stops against one another in a thrilling PacWest Volleyball matchup at the Felix Event Center. This time, the Cougars halted Biola's comeback attempt in the fourth set and handed the Eagles their first loss in over a month with a 3-1 scoreline (17-25, 27-29, 25-16, 24-26).

Just like they did in the last meeting, the Eagles set themselves behind the eight ball, beginning the match dropping the first two sets. Biola didn't have its sea legs under it in the first, hitting just .088 while APU hit a match-best .300 to cruise to a decisive win.

The second set was nothing like that as Biola was able to have the Cougars on the ropes thanks to a massive comeback. It took APU five set point chances to finally put the Eagles away in the game that ultimately played the biggest part in determining the fate of the entire match.

"We battled. You've got to be excited with how they found a way to get back into things," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "Kudos to Azusa Pacific. They had a great home crowd and played well tonight."

Biola got off to a similar start to the second frame as it had in the first, with APU soaring out to a 6-1 lead that remained in place throughout the first half of the game, forcing Seltzer to burn his timeouts by the 12-7 mark. After the Eagles' second timeout, APU scored five of the next seven points to break the game wide open at 17-9.

Fortunately for Biola, the seniors and leaders on the floor rallied the team and created a spark that saw BU rattle off four in a row and 10 of the next 14 to bring it back to within two at 21-19. Karly Dantuma led with three kills during that stretch and Sabrina Winslow added two of her own.

Then it was an unbridled race to the finish with the two teams combining for seven set points. The Eagles were able to defend four, but they couldn't convert on their two chances to win the set, ultimately allowing a Chase Davis service ace to end the set and give APU a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles rode some of the momentum from the end of that second set to a pretty convincing win in the third game to force a fourth set and setup another potential five-set comeback.

Despite APU again getting off to an early lead and keeping the Eagles at arm's length at 17-13, Biola was able to fight back into things and tie the fourth set at 18 and create another fun finish.

The Cougars won the next two to be the first to 20 and then teams traded a few points until Bekah Roth served up an ace to knot things up at 21-21. APU was able to sideout and setup another run of trading points that gave the Cougars a match point at 24-23. A kill from Brinley Beresford defended that and gave serve to Sami Hover as the teams once again headed into extra points.

Back-to-back kills from Serbian-import Katarina Radisic lifted the Cougars to the eventual victory and gave them back possession of first-place in the conference standings (by a half-game).

Christina DenBoer would end up with more kills than any player in the match (17) and earn a double-double with 11 digs as she did all she could to try and help lift her team to team to victory, taking 54 swings on the night.

Sierra Bauder (12) and Karly Dantuma (11) also hit double digits for the Eagles. The 12 kills, .409 hitting and four-block performance was a great showing by Bauder on her birthday.

After recording 16 blocks to help beat the Cougars at home last time, the Eagles managed just seven tonight and trailed APU in that category. Biola led the Cougars in digs (79-77) thanks in large part to Sami Hover's 28-dig effort. It's now four consecutive matches with at least 18 digs  for the Eagles' libero.

"Sami again was all over the place and saved us a ton tonight. Kaitlin also played well," said Seltzer.

Biola drops to 18-6 overall and 14-3 in PacWest play following the loss. The Cougars improve to 18-6 overall and are 14-2 in conference. Biola's road does not get much easier this week as they host the third-place team (0.5 games back) Point Loma (15-7, 12-3 PacWest) on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
