Greens’ Day in Eagles Win

Mikayla Greens gets a career-high in points and nabs a double-double in Biola 72-45 victory.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Mikayla Greens had a career night during Biola's 72-45 win on Wednesday. The sophomore forward reached a new career-high high with 11 points and tied her best mark in rebounds with 13 to register the Eagles' first double-double of the season.

"Our team has a lot of respect for Coach Medina and the Bethesda team," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura.  "They have some scorers and they compete hard every night. Our offensive discipline improved as the game wore on and it is nice to see that we ended up with a season high number of assists."

Bethesda finished the first quarter with a 13-11 lead but quickly fell behind when the Eagles pushed back by scoring the first nine points of the second quarter second quarter. Sara Dougan and Jessica Shill went a combined 5-for-5 in the quarter and Biola shot 55 percent from the field to take lead into halftime at 35-20.

The Flames rallied for their highest-scoring period of the game with 17 points in the third. But that was not enough to slow a Biola team that had gotten into the flow offensively. Nakamura's team went 15-of-33 from the field in the second half to surpass the 70-point plateau for the first time this season and moved the ball so much that eight players collected at least seven points.

"As the game progressed we did a better job of controlling the boards," said Nakamura.  "We were a little careless in the first quarter in a variety of areas, and they made us pay."

Biola finished the game with a plus-19 margin in rebounds as the smaller Bethesda team had trouble creating a presence in the paint. The Eagles would eventually hold Bethesda to under 10 points in two quarters on Wednesday, accomplishing the feat for the second time after holding Western (Ontario) to six and seven-point quarters on Dec. 30.

The Eagles have been on a roll since that date. They have won five of their last six games and are now on a three-game mini-streak after the big win against Bethesda. Biola, now 7-8 overall, will try to climb to a .500 winning percentage for the first time since it improved ro 1-1 on Nov. 16 by defeating th Hawai'i Pacific Sharks when they come to Chase Gym on Saturday.

The Sharks are currently is second place in the PacWest with a 7-1 conference record and are scheduled to play on the road at Azusa on Thursday. Tip-off in La Mirada on Saturday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
