Trailblazers Escape Eagles' Grasp

Dixie State hands the Eagles their first PacWest lost.

ST. GEORGE, Utah --- The Eagles were neck-and-neck with the undefeated Dixie State Trailblazers for 89 minutes on Saturday. But a momentary lull in the 71st minute gave the home team a slim lead that it held to the final whistle.

As tough as Biola played in its first PacWest match, it falls to 1-4-1 (0-1 PWC). Dixie State wins its sixth match in a row and improves to 2-0 in conference play.

"Overall, I am really pleased with the game. I think it's the best we've played and it was great to see the team build off the win on Thursday," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We established ourselves early on in the game, were organized defensively and had some really good looks in the first half."

The match turned into a tug-of-war very quickly since both teams showed they were willing to play tough soccer. Nineteen of the 33 fouls in the match were called in the first 45 minutes of play. But it was the Eagles who had more control of play during the first half.

Biola limited the Trailblazers to just one shot-on-goal in the first half, a slow shot sent toward Igor Puglia in the closing seconds before the break, and took six shots overall compared to three for the home team.

The Eagles' ability to stand tall in the face of the Trailblazers' offense was one of the defining aspects of the entire match and was the primary reason that game stayed scoreless for the first 70 minutes. But the match turned a minute later when the referees charged the Eagles with a handball one step out of the 18-yard box.

With two other Trailblazers standing over the ball, Ather Dawood sent a left-footed strike toward the far post. Puglia got in front of the ball and blocked the majority of its momentum, but the ball trickled out of his hands and spun inside the left post to give the home team a 0-1 lead.

Biola's main chance to equalize came few moments later when the Eagles tried to capitalize on a red card handed to one of the Dixie State defenders with fifteen minutes to go. Elkins' team took four shots in a five-minute span and produced two set pieces on cornerkicks. But Dixie State was successful in its attempt to bunker down and clog the box with its 10 remaining players to make the single tally suffice.

Biola will play its second PacWest match at home this coming Thursday. The Eagles welcome the Argos of Notre Dame De Namur to Al Barbour Field at 7:00 p.m.
