Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Eagles Blank Berumen, Argos

Eagles post their second-straight shutout at home.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles have won the last two matches they have played at Al Barbour Field and it is almost as though Biola copied the defining parts of the first match onto the second.

For the second time, Sammy McKay was the only man to find the back of the net and Biola used toughness and a gritty defense to defeat Notre Dame De Namur 1-0.

Biola now has an even record in conference play (1-1 PacWest, 2-4-1 Overall) with a chance to collect a second win on Saturday. The Argos find themselves in the loss column for the first time this season and are now 6-1-1, 2-1 PacWest.

The Argos were held scoreless for the first time this season largely because Biola was able to keep PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, Esteban Berumen, in check. Berumen had scored in all five of the matches he had appeared in so far this season, but was limited to just one shot-on-goal during his 90 minutes on the pitch.

In a match where both teams brought physicality and tussled for the ball in the middle third of the field, NDNU took a total of five shots on goal to Biola's four.

But the game might have been played differently if Biola would have gotten the goal it thought it had in the second minute. Hunter Finnegan buried a ball inside the post just 66 second to get the crowd at Al Barbour Field to erupt. But a late consultation between the head referee and the linesman overturned the goal into an offsides call and kept the away team even at zeros until late in the half.

After a foul was charged against the Argos in the 40th minute, Clayton Mohler took the dead ball for Biola and placed it on a dime for McKay. The tall defender went airborne just in front of the six yard box and headed the ball inside the left post to give Biola the all-important lead at halftime.

The match's physicality peaked in the second half and a red card to a defender forced the Argos to go down to ten men in their attempt to come back. But the Eagles held on for the victory by taking smart challenges and  keeping themselves between the ball and the goal. Notre Dame De Namur took nine shots in the second half, but only two targeted well enough to force saves from Igor Puglia.

This is the third clean sheet that Puglia and the Biola backline have posted this season.

Biola returns back to Al Barbour Field on Saturday for a match with the Dominican Penguins. Kickoff for the men's match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
