Brown Named Defender of the Week

Brown named PacWest Defender of the Week on Monday.

September 11, 2017

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior Defender Madyson Brown earned PacWest Defender of the Week honors on Monday for her contributions to the Eagles 2-0 shutout of CSU San Marcos last week. This is the second time Brown has earned a weekly conference honor; she was named Defender of the Week in the Golden State Athletic Conference in October 2016. She becomes the first Eagle to earn PacWest Conference honors in Biola's NCAA Division II tenure.

Brown, working alongside fellow center back Cat Newberry, led the Eagles' stand against a very aggressive Cougars side on Saturday that resulted in the second consecutive shutout for Biola. Brown won the vast majority of one-on-one challenges that were created by Cougars attackers on the left side of the pitch and played all 90 minutes.

"Maddy is part of a back line that has been getting stronger each game," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "With the midfield being in flux, her leadership and organization alongside Cat Newberry has been vital to our success. It's great for her to get early recognition for her success so far this season and we're looking forward to seeing how she and the rest of our squad arise to the challenges set forth in our upcoming conference play."

As a result of the efforts of Brown and her fellow defenders, the Eagles were able to limit CSU San Marcos to just one shot-on-goal in each half. The Cougars were 2-1 coming into the match after defeating California Baptist University on Thursday.

The Eagles will play one more match before their PacWest schedule begins on Sept. 23. They host the Hope International Royals at Al Barbour Field on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
