Eagles Earn First NCAA Division II Win

Biola score in second overtime to win 3-2 over Western Oregon.

SALEM, Ore. --- It took a while for the Eagles to get their offense going in the first match of their Oregon road trip. Biola eventually broke through late in the second half and into overtime to start the season with a 3-2 victory over Western Oregon. This is the first victory Biola has as an NCAA Division II institution.

The Eagles found themselves playing from behind early in the match as the Wolves converted a penalty kick in the 14th minute to go ahead 1-0. It was WOU's fourth shot through the first 14 minutes of the match compared to a single attempt for Biola.

The Eagles would storm back about 10 minutes later with familiar threat Samantha Verduzco doing the damage.

For the second straight season, Verduzco became the first Eagle to find the back of the net. The senior forward knotted the score at one in the 25th-minute by beating the Western Oregon left back and sending the ball home from five yards out.

Even though the Wolves took the lead a second time late in the first half, Verduzco's goal marked the beginning of the positive shift in the match for Biola. Kennedy Clay's goal to make the score 2-1 was the final shot Western Oregon produced during the match. Head Coach Erin Brunelle's side simply took over possession; the Eagles out-shot the home team 6-0 the rest of the way and finished the match with a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 71st minute, Biola's perseverance paid off and the opposing defense slipped. Sophomore Sarah Yang sent a ball toward the cage that deflected off a Wolves defender before crossing the goal line for an own goal and a 2-2 tie. From that point on, it was a stalemate through the rest of regulation and through the first overtime period.

Both teams were able to produce two corner kicks during the extra time, but the Eagles pulled away with a shot on goal from Alexis Lee in the first overtime and the eventual game winner from Sarah Jeffries in the 103rd minute.

Jeffries sent a Verduzco cross near post to end the match in  favor of the Eagles and start the season with a win.

The Eagles will remain in Oregon the next two days and return to action on Saturday against Corban (Ore.) at 10:00 a.m.
