How Sweep It Is

Biola Softball earns its first doubleheader sweep since February in strong performances at ERAU.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRESCOTT, Ariz. --- Nothing in softball feels better than a doubleheader sweep. The Eagles hadn't had one of those since their first Golden State Athletic Conference series of the year way back on February 25 until today's sweep of the Embry-Riddle Eagles.

Game one of Thursday's doubleheader was one of the wildest, and most explosive, games of the 2017 season. The Eagles trailed by four runs heading into the final two innings of the game, but managed to come back and win the game 13-10 in extra innings.

Game two was not as explosive offensively, but was equally as intense as Biola squeezed out a 4-3 win when Kaile Chavez stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with a huge strikeout.

The first game began with a bang as Selina Sherlin hit her third homerun of the year to put Biola up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. It was the fifth time in her career that she's homered at Embry-Riddle (in her fifth game there).

After that early offense Embry-Riddle scored six unanswered runs over the next four innings to open a commanding 6-2 lead that held for much of the game.

The visiting Eagles could not find an answer against ERAU starter Olivia Ramos until the top of the sixth inning when the pressure was at its highest. Biola's comeback attempt began as it so often has this year — with a Maranda Galindo infield single and stolen base.

After she reached to leadoff the inning Biola managed to put up four runs on hits from Jay Perez, Anjie Amezquita and Areana Ramos to knot the game at six and force the Embry-Riddle pitcher out of the game.

Once Galindo kick-started the offense in the sixth it did not stop for the remainder of the game. The Eagles scored two in the seventh to pull ahead and put themselves in a position to win the game, and then put up a 5-spot in the extra inning in order to secure the win after ERAU used a two-run blast to tie things in the bottom of the seventh.

The 13 runs in game one is a new season-best for this team. It's the most the Eagles have scored in one game since they put up the same tally in a win over Hamline at home in March of last year.

They scored all the runs by way of 13 hits, four walks, a hit-by-pitch and three Embry-Riddle errors. It was a total team effort as every started reached base at least once and all but three spots in the order scored at least one run.

Sherlin and Amezquita, batting fourth and fifth, had the biggest days at the plate in the opener. They combined to go 5-for-9 with five RBI and five runs scored. Galindo scored twice and also stole two bags to move up to 21 steals on the year.

The second game saw a similar start to game one as the visiting Eagles had a first inning homerun to take control of the game right away. This time it was Kayla Neff leaving the yard. It was her fourth big fly of the year and got Biola out to a 1-0 lead before ERAU could even grab their bats against Terri Van Dagens.

Embry-Riddle tied the game at one in its half of the first before Biola scored three unanswered runs to open up a comfortable 4-1 lead as a sweep began to look more and more probable.

Through three full innings the score was 4-2 Biola, and that is where it stayed until the bottom of the seventh inning. Pitching and defense took over the game in the middle innings, which was a far cry from what we saw late in the opener.

In its final at-bats Embry-Riddle got a two-out single to push the game to 4-3 before loading the bases and putting all the pressure squarely on the shoulders of the pitcher, Chavez, and batter, Makenzie Hospodka. Chavez won the battle by recovering from a first pitch ball to strike out the batter in five pitches and end the game.

Riding the confidence of their two wins today the Eagles play two more tomorrow to cap off this Arizona road trip. Biola plays at Arizona Christian (23-20, 5-11) beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Eagles split with the Firestorm earlier this year.
