Box Score 2 ROCKLIN, Calif. --- Biola Softball was fighting for their playoff lives on Saturday up at William Jessup, but unfortunately the fight fell a bit short after a pair of losses to the Warriors.
Â
Playing at home on their senior day the Warriors took full advantage of the emotional advantage and put up 7-0 and 12-8 wins to end the Eagles' season.
Â
Biola was held without a hit for four innings against WJU's Shelbi Graifman, which put them behind the eight ball early in game one as the Warriors scored three in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Â
The Eagles would be able to get five hits off of senior reliever Amanda Taylor, but they stranded all the runners that reached against her during the final three innings and were held scoreless in the loss.
Â
Game two was much more competitive as Biola managed runs in all but one inning, but a five-run fifth inning for William Jessup put them over the top.
Â
The Eagles' eight runs came off three doubles, seven singles, three WJU errors, seven walks and a pair of hit-by-pitches. Each of the top-6 hitters in head coach
Lorie Coleman's lineup scored one run and seniors
Kimmy Triolo and
Kasey Hormel (the eight and nine hitters) also scored one run to get Biola to its final tally of eight runs.
Â
The three doubles came from Biola's biggest power bats of
Kayla Neff,
Selina Sherlin and
Anjie Amezquita. That trio combined to drive in 67 of Biola's 193 runs scored this season. Neff (23) and Sherlin (25) were the only two Eagles to top 20 RBI.
Â
William Jessup took the lead in game two when they turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 advantage with a three-run second inning. They never trailed after that point, but would have if not for the five runs in the fifth. Biola scored two in the first, one in the second and third, another one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the sixth as they gave all they could to finish the season strong.
Â
When all was said and done the Eagles finish the year with a 21-22-2 overall record and just miss out on qualifying for the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament.
Areana Ramos ends the year leading the team with a .388 batting average.
Kaile Chavez, who was saddled with a tough luck loss in game two today, ends the year as the team's best pitcher. She was 7-6 this season with a team-high 93.2 innings pitched and 3.89 earned run average.
Â
Now the Eagles turn their focus to the offseason and getting prepared for their first season as NCAA Division II and PacWest Conference members in 2018.
Â
Thanks so much to the senior class of 2017 for their contributions to the program! Kasey, Kimmy, Maranda, Kirstin and Briana, you will be missed!
