Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Tuesday's doubleheader with San Diego Christian had a little bit of everything in an energetic evening at Freedom Field. It was the Eagles' senior night and the teams celebrated with one win a piece in a Golden State Athletic Conference split.
Â
Biola bashed five homeruns on the evening, there were spells of fantastic pitching on both sides, a time set aside to honor both teams' seniors during pregame, and the field's sprinklers even came on late in game two, which gave everybody a brief break in action.
Â
San Diego Christian took game one 6-3 behind a complete game from their ace pitcher Kendra Kuper. Kuper held the Eagles without a run all game long until the team exploded for three runs on two homeruns in the bottom of the seventh. Even still SDC got the win and Kuper needed just 85 pitches in the complete game effort.
Â
Game two was in Biola's hands for much of the night. The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead as
Selina Sherlin, the game two starting pitcher, left the yard in the first inning. They ultimately would win 7-3, being helped out by another pair of homers and some great relief pitching from
Terri Van Dagens.
Â
"We knew that the last few innings of game one represented more of the team we actually are," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "When we came out for game two we knew we had to have fun and be who we normally are. The team came out and did well, we knew we were going to get a win if we came out and maintained more of that thought process and momentum."
Â
After a happy time of celebrating Biola's senior class of
Briana Acuna,
Maranda Galindo,
Kirstin Gutierrez,
Kasey Hormel and
Kimmy Triolo things were spoiled a bit when San Diego Christian used three hits and some walks to push across four runs in the top of the first inning of game two.
Â
That big inning got in the head of the team early on and kept them from being able to do much of anything to fight back as SDC built itself a 7-0 lead through the first six and a half innings.
Â
It wasn't until the seventh inning when a one-out no-doubt-about-it homerun off the bat of
Anjie Amezquita woke up the Biola bench and started to shift the tone of the night once again.
Â
Amezquita's homer was followed by a Triolo double and then a moonshot off the bat of pinch-hitter
Alexis Parker to make the first game get to its final resting spot of 6-3. It was a special moment as it was Parker's first homerun in a Biola uniform.
Â
"Everybody on the team participated in some way tonight," said Coleman. "We had great contributions from all around, whether it was in the first game or the second game. That was important as we really wanted to earn at least one win for our seniors tonight."
Â
With some ups and downs in the circle as of late Coleman's squad has really had to up the ante in the batter's box. The coaching staff was really looking for a calm, collected performance in the circle in game two, which is why they looked to the ever-steady
Selina Sherlin.
Â
Sherlin went three innings in her spot start and was doing a great job of keeping the Hawks off the base paths. She allowed just one run and three hits through three strong and was only pulled because of a cramp in her leg when she went out to throw in the fourth.
Â
She exited the game with a 2-1 lead; both Biola runs coming courtesy her earlier big fly. Van Dagens came out of the bullpen for the third time this season and handled the unusual role very well. Her changeup was working in full force on the evening as she was able to set down three Hawks by way of strikeout en route to her second win of the year.
Â
She gave up two runs in the fifth inning, but aside from that put up all zeroes in an impressive outing.
Â
Those two runs in the fifth tied the game at three runs a piece. Biola's third run had come one inning previous off
Areana Ramos' fourth homerun of the season.
Â
After the game got tied Biola would score one in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game to bed. A sacrifice fly scored Galindo in the fifth to serve as the "game-winning run."
Â
Then,
Jay Perez crushed a ball over the right field fence for her first collegiate homerun. Her three-run shot was Biola's fifth of the night. The last time the Eagles hit five homers in one series was March 12, 2016 against Embry-Riddle.
Â
"Everything we did tonight was for the seniors," said Coleman.
As a sweet addition to the fun four of Biola's five seniors reached base at least once on the evening. Galindo was especially dangerous as she had four hits, stole a base and scored three runs.
Â
The split puts Biola at 20-17-2 on the season. The Eagles are 7-11 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, with a two-game advantage in the loss column over San Diego Christian and Arizona Christian. Biola's 11 losses matches the tally of their next conference opponent, Hope International. That road doubleheader on Thursday is very important for the Eagles' postseason aspirations.
