Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball hosted Arizona Christian on a hazy Saturday at Freedom Field and the two teams split the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Eagles taking the first and the Firestorm taking the second.
Â
Biola won game one 4-2 behind tremendous pitching by
Kimmy Triolo and
Kaile Chavez and a game-winning two-run homerun by
Selina Sherlin.
Â
ACU took a quick 2-0 lead by grabbing single runs in the first and second innings, but the Eagles held the Firestorm to just two hits over the final five innings while countering with nine hits of their own to secure the win.
Â
The Eagles scored one in the second as a successful
Hailey Boyett sacrifice bunt put Sherlin into scoring position to be hit home by
Areana Ramos with one out. That would be all Biola would score in the second, but after a scoreless top of the third they were able to put three on the board in the bottom half of the third.
Â
The biggest blast came when Sherlin homered to left field to score herself and
Karen Lieng with two outs in the inning.
Â
That would prove to be the decisive moment of the ballgame as Triolo held the Firestorm scoreless for the next two innings and Chavez came in to close things out for her first save of the year.
Â
Triolo earned the win, which was her seventh of the season.
Â
Game two did not go in the Eagles' favor as Arizona Christian put up seven runs on seven hits and three Biola errors. The Eagles outhit the Firestorm 12-7, but left 10 runners on the bases to suffer their third GSAC loss of the year.
Â
The biggest highlight of the second game was a 4-for-4 performance by
Missy Poti as she hit for the first time in what was just her second game of the year.
Â
Biola became 14-7-2 and is now 3-3 in GSAC play with the results of today's contests. ACU became 7-11 and moved to 3-5 in GSAC. The Eagles are back in action on Friday and Saturday of this coming week as they host William Jessup and Menlo College.Â
