Red Hawks Rally Past Eagles

Biola suffers another heartbreaking loss in game one, despite playing great throughout.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite the final score lines reading as another two losses for Head Coach Lorie Coleman's Softball team should go home with their head held high after their Thursday doubleheader with No. 14 Simpson because they did all they could to put themselves in a great position to win game one, before coming up just short.

The Eagles exploded for eight runs in the opener by taking a patient approach at the plate and taking advantage of almost all of their opportunities to push runs across the plate. It was a welcomed offensive outburst after getting held to just one run in 14 innings two days ago.

Unfortunately the highly ranked Red Hawks scored three times in the final inning to push their tally to nine and steal game one from the expectant Eagles, 9-8. Following the heartbreak in game one the Eagles' offense came out with a bit less energy in the nightcap and suffered an 8-0 loss that reached the run rule after the sixth inning.

The game one loss stung as it was the first time this season that Biola lost a game in which it scored eight runs or more. The Eagles were 3-0 in such games coming into today.

The Eagles earned their eight runs off the merit of nine hits, two walks and a trio of hit-by-pitches. They also did well to limit their strikeouts against a pair of strong strikeout pitchers. This was a great sign of improvement from earlier this week when the offense suffered a 10-strikeout outing.

Coach Coleman's team showed great resilience in the opener as they answered back with lots of firepower after the No. 14 Red Hawks hung three runs in the first inning, including a massive two-run homerun.

The Eagles answered with one in the first, two in the second and four in the third to build a commanding 7-3 lead as Kaile Chavez began to settle into a rhythm against the dangerous Simpson lineup.

Chavez held the Red Hawks to no runs and just two hits in the second, third and fourth before being removed in favor of Paula Damas to get a bit of rest.

She didn't get to sit down for long though as Simpson was able to get two runners on for Mia Olvera, the Red Hawks' No. 3 hitter, who went yard to make the game 7-6. This all happened with Damas only able to set down one hitter before Chavez came back in the game.

Chavez quickly got out of that fifth inning with no further damage done and had a 1-2-3 sixth to send Biola into the seventh with all the momentum in their favor. Chavez came out for the top of the seventh with just the one-run lead and the prospects of facing 1-2-3 in the Red Hawks' lineup.

She had to get the leadoff batter out in order to keep the momentum in the Eagles' favor and set herself up well to finish off the win. That hitter, Madison Wright, was 2-for-3 entering this at-bat and had already scored two runs, which made an out even more integral.

It appeared that Chavez beat her and won the at-bat when Wright flew out to left field and Anjie Amezquita made a remarkable diving catch to get the inning started well and keep the momentum in favor of BU. However, the home plate umpire ruled that Amezquita trapped the ball, with the ball securely in the basket of her glove, and the wind was completely released for Biola's sails. Simpson went on to score three runs in the inning to retake the lead and ultimately grab the win.

Areana Ramos blasted her second homerun of the season in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough to tie the game up and Biola ended up dropping its third in a row.

Ramos had a huge game one. She went 3-for-3 and crossed home plate three times while also picking up two RBI. She was the only Eagle to have multiple hits, score multiple runs or drive in multiple runs on the day.

The Eagles lost their fourth straight in the run-rule game in the second game. The Red Hawks outhit Biola 13-4 in that game and 19 total base runners in the outing.

Biola falls to 16-13-2 with the losses. Simpson improved to 23-7. The Eagles now have over a week to regroup before they have to travel to Costa Mesa to play two with No. 17 Vanguard (29-7, 8-2 GSAC) on March 31.
