Box Score 2 SANTEE, Calif. --- Biola Softball had to face 14 innings of a dominant Kendra Kuper on Tuesday afternoon in a pair of Golden State Athletic Conference losses to San Diego Christian.
Â
The Eagles' offense struggled to gain traction all day against the Hawks' only arm. She held Biola to just a single run in the second game as the Eagles were beat 2-0 and 3-1 on the home turf of San Diego Christian.
Â
Kuper, who came into the day with well over 140 innings under her belt already this season, had Biola's batter spellbound in inducing 15 strikeouts and holding the Eagles to a total of 10 hits for the two contests. The Eagles were at a distinct disadvantage of having to face one of the better pitchers in the conference after having not faced live pitching in 10 days. It's been over a week since the Eagles' walk-off win over Menlo.
Â
Biola's pitching staff was not too far behind the Hawks' senior sensation. If not for a two-out, two-run double for SDC in the bottom of the first inning in game one the game would've been all knotted at zeroes through regulation. That was thanks in large part to four scoreless innings of two-hit ball pitched by
Kaile Chavez in relief.
Â
Biola's bats just could not find a way to overcome the narrow deficit in the opener. They were pushing hard, only allowing one 1-2-3 inning to Kuper, but couldn't quite navigate a runner or two across home plate.
Â
The closest Biola would come to scoring in the game one shutout loss was in the top of the fifth when a one-out
Maranda Galindo hit would eventually see her reach scoring position before being stranded on second. She was the only runner to reach scoring position for BU at all in the opener.
Â
Game two again saw a lot of its scoring at the outset of the contest as San Diego Christian scored enough runs to win the game (two) in the bottom of the first. Four of the first five batters either walked or were hit by a pitch and two of them came around to score before
Paula Damas came in the game and shut the inning down.
Â
Damas would pitch well in another strong relief outing. She went those final two-thirds of the first inning and then threw three more on top of that and only gave up three hits to the Hawks. She did allow one more run in the bottom of the fourth to complete their scoring at three.
Â
Biola got its only run of the day in the top of the third when
Kayla Neff hit a solo homerun. It is the freshman's third homer of the season and was her only hit of the day.
Â
The lack of offense was especially painful in the game two loss because the Eagles had even better chances to turn the momentum of the afternoon with some offense. They had the bases loaded in the top of the first and couldn't score anyone. Then, with their backs against the wall, in the seventh managed to get Galindo and
Anjie Amezquita on base with just one out but could not score.
Â
The second game came to an end with a very well struck ball off the bat of
Selina Sherlin that nestled neatly into the glove of a SDC outfielder on the run.
Â
Biola falls to 16-11-2 and 5-7 in GSAC play following the two losses. The Eagles have a chance to get back on track with a non-conference home series against Simpson on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
