Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- When a pair of teams with 3-3 Golden State Athletic Conference records go head-to-head the probability that they'd split their doubleheader is pretty high.
That's exactly what happened on Friday afternoon at Freedom Field as William Jessup capitalized on a seven-run inning in the opener and the Eagles shut them out in the nightcap to win one and lose one.
The Warriors' only runs of the game in the opener came in the top of the first inning, but their pitcher through a complete game and held the Eagles to just one run, an
Anjie Amezquita solo homerun to win 7-1.
Biola split the second game between starter
Terri Van Dagens (four innings) and freshman
Paula Damas (three innings) and they combined to hold the Warriors off the board in a very intense 1-0 Biola victory.
"I think today's battle was all mental as we had to overcome that hard inning in game one," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "We needed that victory pretty bad in game two. I think tomorrow we will be more back to ourselves."
Kimmy Triolo began game one and had trouble locating pitches early, which caused Coleman to take her out after just 0.1 innings.
Kaile Chavez came in and got the final two outs of the first inning, albeit after seven runs crossed the plate for the visitors, and then went on to pitch six more scoreless frames in the game one loss.
It was a tremendous performance from the sophomore, who at one point had set down 12 Warriors in a row. She went 6.2 innings, struck out four, allowed only four hits and one earned run in an impressive relief performance.
Problem in the first game was that Biola could do a whole lot of nothing against WJU's returning all-conference ace Shelbi Graifman. The junior hurler posted her 10
th complete game of the season and earned her fifth win while striking out eight and walking none.
The one mistake she did make all day was a pitch right down broadway to Amezquita, who's been red hot and pulled the ball well over the left field fence for her first homerun of the year. The big fly put her to 11 RBI this season, which makes her one of three Eagles in triple digits.
In the second game the pendulum tilted a bit more in Biola's favor with the veteran Van Dagens in the circle and a freshman starting for William Jessup. The Eagles took full advantage and put up eight hits and loaded the bases in three separate innings in the second game.
The 1-0 score can be deceiving because coach Coleman's offense really was producing hits and producing base runners all game long, just not pushing runs across.
The team spoiled bases loaded chances in the first inning and the third inning before finally cashing in during the bottom half of the fifth. Biola also had a runner reach scoring position in all but two of its offensive innings.
The game-winning run came home with two outs in the fifth.
Areana Ramos started the inning with a leadoff single. She would be the first out though as she was thrown out at second on a
Selina Sherlin fielder's choice. Then walks from
Hailey Boyett and
Kayla Neff loaded the bases as they sandwiched around a strikeout.
This caused Coleman to make a lineup change as she knew her team needed to capitalize on this third bases loaded opportunity. She brought in
Karen Lieng to pinch hit for
Briana Acuna and it turned out to be the right push of the button. Lieng took a walk, coming back from being down in the count 0-2, and pushed the game's only run across the plate.
"It feels great," said Lieng. "This win is a confidence boost for our team after the first game."
Paula Damas, who came in during the top of the fifth inning, earned the pitching victory as she put up three scoreless frames and faced only one batter over the minimum. She moved her record to an even 3-3 and helped Biola improve to 15-8-2 (4-4 GSAC) as the season pushes just past its halfway point.
"This was a big day for our pitching staff," said Coleman. "To regroup and not let in a run for the second inning on was on the plus side. We know if our pitchers are feeling good and feeling strong we have a big advantage."
Biola is back at Freedom Field Saturday at noon as it hosts Menlo College (15-13, 2-6 GSAC).
