Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Just about five minutes after completing a convincing win over La Sierra by finishing the final three innings of a game that was suspended last week the Biola Softball team had to hit the reset button and jump right into two more with the Golden Eagles.
Â
The two teams played each other tight in what was a low-scoring pitcher's dual through six innings, but explosive seventh innings on both sides led to a 8-7 walk-off win for La Sierra in the opener.
Â
With just over an hour left before sundown, when the Golden Eagles have suspend all athletic competition to observe Sabbath, the two teams rushed into a second game. They were able to complete six full innings before the game was called and ended in a 3-3 tie.
Â
GAME ONE RECAP:
Kaile Chavez got her second start of the season in the first game of the doubleheader. She put up two easy scoreless innings in the first and second before she ran into a spot of trouble in the third and was relived by freshman
Paula Damas.
Â
The two innings Chavez was in the circle she had the luxury of pitching with a lead thanks to some early work from the Biola offense. The Eagles scored a single run in the first inning and another single run in the second to pull out to a quick 2-0 lead.
Â
Both runs were scored on singles to the outfield as
Selina Sherlin drove in the first and
Jay Perez the second.
Â
La Sierra began the third inning with a walk and three straight hits to flip the game on its head and take a 3-2 lead. That run is what forced Chavez out of the game in favor of Damas.
Â
Kayla Neff caught a base runner stealing second and the Eagles turned a double play to quickly get out of the inning before too much more damage was done.Â
Â
A two-out error by LSU, their only error of the game, allowed the Eagles to tie things up at three in the next inning, which is where things would stay until the bottom of the sixth when La Sierra drove one run home to take a new lead heading into the final at-bats.
Â
The Eagles did not go down easy in their top of the seventh inning, leading off with four hits in a row, highlighted by
Areana Ramos' two-RBI triple. They scored two more on a
Kasey Hormel single and
Anjie Amezquita sacrifice fly to go into the bottom of the seventh feeling confident.
Â
Unfortunately, that confidence quickly faded as the home team rallied to win the game with a walk-off hit with only one out recorded.
Â
GAME TWO RECAP:
After throwing three innings in the early-morning game and facing one batter in the opener of the doubleheader
Kimmy Triolo returned to start the second game.
Â
She pitched the entire six innings and held the Golden Eagles to just five hits. Three of those five hits came in the bottom of the fifth inning when the home team narrowly avoided a loss by cracking the Kimmy code and scoring two runs to tie the game just before sundown.
Â
Up until that inning Triolo had been just as dominant as she was this morning, holding the Golden Eagles to two hits and just three other base runners in a quick first four innings.
Â
All three of Biola's runs came in one inning, the third inning. The Eagles broke a 0-0 deadlock by demonstrating a little bit of skill and also benefitting from a little bit of luck.
Â
The inning began with an error by La Sierra's shortstop allowing
Kirstin Gutierrez to reach with one out already in the inning. Biola kept the inning going with three singles in a row, stole a base and used a successful squeeze play to extend the lead to 3-0.
Â
It was the first sign of life for the Biola offense against Vanessa Froussine, who had set down the Eagles in order in the first two innings. Froussine would also pitch all six innings of the game and was much better than she was her first outing against BU. She allowed just one earned run and racked up six strikeouts.
Â
Biola took its 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth in what most thought would be the final three outs to be played before sundown. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Golden Eagles began the inning with a double, triple and single to tie the game before a single out would be recorded.
Â
Triolo bounced right back after the shock of the tying runs and set down the next six batters in order to lead to the 3-3 tie following a sixth inning.
Â
Biola sits at 1-2-1 following its first two series of the year (both against La Sierra). The Golden Eagles are 3-2-1, including a 1-1 split with No. 25 San Diego Christian.
Â
The Eagles' schedule continues this coming Tuesday when they travel to Azusa for a pair of early-evening games against future PacWest foe Azusa Pacific.
