Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The night did not go as planned on Tuesday evening as Biola Softball hosted Vanguard last minute and suffered two losses at the hands of the visiting Lions.
Â
The Eagles outhit Vanguard 12-7 in the first game, but got outscored 8-3 to drop the game. The Lions' starter was on point from start to finish in game two and allowed only one hit to Biola in what would be a 3-0 Vanguard win.
Â
The two losses pushes Biola to 2-2 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while the visitors improved to 4-0 on the year against conference competition.
Â
The theme of the game in the opener was Biola stranding runners on base. Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's team had no problems getting runners to reach, but it was moving them around that proved to be difficult. The Eagles left eight runners on the base paths in what would be a five-run loss.
Â
The Eagles' defense struggled a bit too, which made it hard for
Paula Damas and
Kimmy Triolo to get in and out of innings consistently. Biola committed three errors and allowed five of Vanguard's eight runs to come home with two outs already in the inning.
Â
The highlight of the opening game loss was when
Areana Ramos unloaded on a 1-1 pitch in the third inning to drive a two-run homerun out of the ballpark in left field.
Â
Unfortunately for the Eagles that was the only bit of productive, explosive offense they could muster on this day where they got held to three runs in 14 innings.
Â
The only hit in game two was an
Anjie Amezquita bunt single down the third base line. Outside of that Biola's hitters were making solid contact, but hitting the ball right into the defense. Vanguard's defense was stellar all night, not committing a single error behind its two starting pitchers, both of whom threw complete games.
Â
The two losses drops Biola to 13-6-2 overall as we hit the halfway point to the season. The Eagles will need to rediscover their offense quickly as they are set to host Arizona Christian (5-7, 1-3 GSAC) for a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
