Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Following six full days without competition the Eagles were definitely ready to get back to playing softball at Freedom Field on Thursday afternoon. It was a beautiful, clear day in La Mirada that made a picturesque backdrop for today's non-conference doubleheader with Marymount.
Â
The Eagles pitchers took full advantage of the perfect conditions and help the Marymount bats at bay all day long, allowing just three total runs through the two contests earning Biola two wins. The Eagles got a 2-1 win in game one behind a complete game from
Kimmy Triolo and followed that up with a 4-2 win in
Terri Van Dagens' first start of the season.
Â
Pitching was the dominant storyline of the day as the BU bats were a bit quieter than normal while all four of Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's primary pitchers logged good innings.
Â
Triolo obviously turned in the best performance of the day with her complete game, one-run win. But Van Dagens,
Kaile Chavez and
Paula Damas all combined to hold the Mariners to just two early runs in a game two that was never really in doubt.
Â
Biola got out in front early in both games, thanks in large part to the continued great production from
Maranda Galindo in the leadoff spot. The speedster forced an error by the first baseman to reach right away in game one and then stole a base, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Biola through one inning of play.
Â
The Mariners would get the run back in the next inning by scoring after getting a leadoff triple after a tremendous diving attempt by
Areana Ramos in right field came up just short.
Â
The game would stay tied as Triolo and Marymount's Mary Gonzales would dual over the next few innings. Triolo mixed velocity well and had the MCU hitters off balance all afternoon, inducing four strikeouts and allowing just three hits.
Â
The game-winning run crossed the plate in the fifth inning when
Jay Perez was hit by a pitch and came around to score when an error turned
Selina Sherlin's single into a three-base hit.
Â
The Eagles quickly set down the Mariners in easy sixth and seventh innings to seal game one.
Â
Then it was Van Dagens' time to shine after a short 30-minute break between games. She came out of the dougout and allowed a leadoff single before retiring three in a row to get a great first inning under her belt.
Â
She had a similarly easy second inning as she got two quick outs, walked a batter and then induced a pop fly to get through two with ease.
Â
By the time she came back out for the third inning the Eagles had already spotted her two runs by way of two-out RBI singles in the first and second innings.
Â
She got into a spot of trouble with two batters reaching before she could get the second and third outs in the inning and Head Coach
Lorie Coleman decided to take her out to not put too much pressure on her in her first outing of the year.
Â
Chavez came in and dealt well with the situation, ultimately stranding the bases loaded while getting the final two outs. Chavez would go two innings in the middle of this game and would allow two Marymount runs that brought the game back even until the Eagles' half of the fifth.
Â
With two outs in that half of the fifth
Areana Ramos hit a ball that was bobble by the second baseman and allowed
Andi Hormel to score from second base. That would turn out to be the game-winning run in what turned into a 4-2 ballgame one inning later.
Â
That final run of the game was once again manufactured by the speed and tenacity of one ms. Galindo. She reached on a bunt single, stole second and got sacrificed over in order to score on a
Selina Sherlin single.
Â
That formula for run scoring is fool proof and should help the Eagles win many ball games this year as long as the team's pitching stays where it's at. The Biola staff is now combining for just a 2.59 ERA through 17 games.
Â
Paula Damas did all she could to lower that ERA during a sparking 2.2 innings of relief in game two. She got the win in the game, which was the first of her collegiate career.
Â
Damas held the Mariners to just one hit and struck out three as she dominated from start to finish in her outing.
Â
The Eagles move to 11-4-2. The Mariners drop to 0-6. Biola is next in action on Saturday night as they open the Golden State Athletic Conference season against Hope International (6-2) at home at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
