Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- Biola Softball's winning streak is now up to five games and the team is now averaging nearly six runs-per-game following two explosive wins over Antelope Valley on Saturday.
Â
The doubleheader in Lancaster was looking to be in jeopardy late yesterday afternoon as the rains were pouring down and the city of Lancaster was dragging its feet on if it would allow the two teams to get the games in today. Thankfully for Biola the city made the call early Saturday morning to all the games to go on.
Â
Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's squad took full advantage of being able to get those games in and worked a 10-6 win in game one before earning its first run-rule win of the year with a 12-3 victory in the second game.
Â
For the second day in a row the highlight was the offensive performance of freshman phenom
Kayla Neff. Neff hit the Eagles' first two homeruns of the season when she went yard twice in the second game and drove in a total of seven runs in a 4-for-4 performance. The seven RBI ties Neff with
Vanessa Coleman and Mary Dinsmore for the most in a single game in program history.
Â
She also got two hits in the opener, but the bulk of the production in that game came out of the six and seven spots in the order, instead of Neff's cleanup spot.
Anjie Amezquita went 3-for-4 and crossed the plate twice while driving in a team-high four RBI.
Alexis Parker, batting one spot behind Amezquita, was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
Â
The Eagles combined for 28 hits, including nine for extra bases, in the pair of wins. Senior
Kasey Hormel, who was in the starting lineup for both games of the doubleheader for the first time this year, made the most of her two hits today. She hit one double and one triple and scored a run to supply some production at the bottom of coach Coleman's order.
Â
The entire team seemed to have a good day at the dish as runs came from all around in both contests. In the first game each of the first seven spots in the order crossed the plate at least once, and in the second game the same could be said about the top six positions in the order.
Â
Biola's pitching staff also did what it needed to do today in order to lift the Eagles over the Pioneers.
Selina Sherlin,
Kimmy Triolo,
Kaile Chavez and
Paula Damas all saw some time in the circle for at least two innings and the staff combined to allow just eight earned runs to a powerful Antelope Valley offense.
Â
The best pitching performance of the day probably belonged to Sherlin. She came in after three innings in the first game and pitched four innings of four-hit ball in holding UAV to just one earned run.
Â
Maranda Galindo stole a base in each game and has now stolen at least one base in each of the last six games. She's up to eight on the year now, which puts her second in the NAIA at this point in the season.
Â
The only area of the game that coach Coleman will likely be looking to improve upon after today's performance will be the defense. The Eagles committed three errors today and have 11 through their first 10 games of the season.
Â
Biola improves to 6-3-1 on the season and gets back to a challenging preseason schedule on Tuesday when it faces former Golden State Athletic Conference rival and future PacWest foe Concordia-Irvine (5-3) for two games on Tuesday afternoon.
