Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. --- Just under two months ago the unranked William Jessup Warriors upset the nation's No. 1 team inside of Chase Gymnasium on the opening night of the 2016-17 Golden State Athletic Conference season.
Â
The now No. 6 Biola Eagles were determined to not allow that same result tonight in front of a large, but evenly split home and away crowd up at William Jessup. The Eagles were able to successfully avenge that loss from earlier in the season and made a loud statement with an emphatic 74-58 win.
Â
The win made it so that Biola could guarantee that no team in the conference could claim more than one win against them in this regular season. Biola lost the first meetings with Westmont and Jessup and successfully avenged both and suffered its only other loss of the year in its second game against The Master's University last week.
Â
Dakari Archer led the show for
Dr. Dave Holmquist this evening, which was exactly what the Eagles needed since they had to play without the presence of
Caelan Tiongson inside. The Eagles' second-leading scorer was sitting out with injury, but he's expected to be back in time for Saturday's contest at Menlo.
Â
Archer would lead all scorers with 25 points on an economical 11 shots from the field. He was 11-for-15 from the free-throw line, which was a strong performance in an area where the Eagles struggled on Thursday night.
Â
Biola was sent to the charity stripe 48 times, a season-high, but cashed in on only 54 percent of those free throws. That percentage is the team's second lowest in any one game this season. The other poor performance – 46 percent in the Dec. 10 loss to William Jessup.
Â
The Eagles got off to a quick start to the game thanks in large part to
Steve Herve. The big man from Cameroon was making just his fifth start of the season tonight, and he made the most of it, especially in the first half.
Â
He would end the game with four blocks, which is the most in any game by any Eagle this season. Three of those came in the first half; a first half where he paired the blocks with six rebounds and four points in a strong 15 minutes.
Â
His work on the defensive end, along with 10 first-half points from
Jeff Gonzalez and a perfect shooting performance and eight points from
Trevor Treinen, helped BU take a 40-28 lead into the halftime break and feel very confident heading into the final 20 minutes.
Â
Coming out of halftime the Warriors were able to string together points more consistently as their three-point shooting began to heat up. However, Biola was forcing a lot of misses from mid-range and allowing next to nothing down low as it continued to keep WJU at arms length.
Â
William Jessup would end the game with 10 three-point makes, which is two shy of their season-high. However, Biola would force them to shoot just 30 percent from the field in this game making all the difference in the big point differential. The Eagles' impressive interior defense and superior physicality held William Jessup to just 12 points in the paint.
Â
The Warriors would get the game to as close as eight points early on in the second half, but Archer ended that real quick by scoring five points in a row by himself and extending the lead to double-digits again. He had 18 points in the second-half on 67 percent shooting.
Â
Alex Talma was another standout player of the bench for Biola tonight. The New Zealander finished one point shy of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points in just 19 minutes on the floor.
Â
Biola improved to 24-3 overall and 9-3 in GSAC play. Hope International defeated The Master's this evening to remain a half-game ahead of the Eagles at the top of the conference standings at 9-2.
Â
The Eagles' road trip continues on Saturday afternoon as Biola face Menlo (10-13, 3-8) at 4:00 p.m.
