Eagles Earn Spot In Championship

Biola Volleyball beats SAGU in three to earn NCCAA Final berth.

KISSIMMEE, Florida --- Biola Volleyball's undefeated run through the National Christian College Athletic Association Volleyball Championships continued on Saturday morning with a no holds barred dominant win over SAGU (25-15, 26-24, 25-17).

The Eagles' win setup a well-anticipated NCCAA Championship match between the No. 1 seeded Eagles (5-0) and the No. 2 seeded Campbellsville Tigers (5-0).

Both Biola and CU earned 3-0 victories in their semifinal match in order to advance to the tournament's finale, which is slated for a 12:00 p.m. PT start time.

The Eagles stormed out of the gate with a 25-15 win in the first set with a new tournament-best 20 kills in the first set. Biola hit .349 for the set and ended the match with a .304 clip, which is the team's second-best of the tournament.

Biola ended the match with 55 kills to set a new three-set season-best. For context, the team had 51 kills in last night's four-set win over Emmanuel.

The second set was make or break for both teams and it just so happened to break in favor of the Eagles, which allowed them to secure their third three-set sweep of the tournament. Biola started the second set with a 5-2 lead, but a four-point run by SAGU brought the game back to a competitive place real quick.

The two teams continued to trade little mini stretches of points until the set was tied at 12 and SAGU began to rattle off five points in a row to have folks beginning to think of an upset.

Three of those five points came off back-to-back-to-back Biola attack errors, which was the first of two sets of three-straight errors committed by the Eagles in this set. The other one came later after Biola had fought back to take a 20-18 lead. The stretch of three bad plays allowed SAGU to take a 21-20 lead and stay in the set.

Finally Biola managed to win six of the final eight points to earn the 26-24 win with a Sierra Bauder slam to finish it off.

The team cruised through the third set with 18 kills and a match-high .432 hitting percentage. This effort allowed them to seal the match and secure their place in the finals.

Biola dominated every stat category in this one, but one of the widest margins was in digs. BU set a three-set season-high with 61 of those, compared to SAGU's 45. It was not always the usual leaders that were keeping the ball up either. Brinley Beresford led with 14 digs, followed by 14 from Kaitlin O'Brien, 12 from Sabrina Winslow, eight by Sami Hover and seven from Tess Van Grouw.

The dream team of Sabrina Winslow and Sierra Bauder led the offensive attack with 12 kills a piece. They were the only Eagles to go above double-digits in this one as the attack was pretty evenly spread out. Bauder had her third game hitting over .455 in this tournament. She actually had the exact same line she had in a win over Bluefield with 12 kills on 19 swings and only two errors (.526). She also got in on four of Biola's five blocks as the attention for tournament MVP could start shifting to her.
