Seniors Seal Semifinal Victory

At the conclusion of a thrilling match, Samantha Verduzco, Ashley Ramirez and Janae Megorden combine to score the game-winner.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Biola Eagles kept their season alive on Friday with a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 3 Concordia Ann Arbor in the NCCAA Women's Soccer Semifinals. With 11.6 seconds left, senior captain Janae Megorden got her body between the Cardinals' goalkeeper and the ball for it to eventually cross the goalline and win the match for Biola in regulation.

The own goal propels Biola into Saturday's Championship against No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan at 3:45 p.m. (PT).

The Eagles found their game-winner just moments after they neutralized a Concordia Ann Arbor set piece and raced down the field for a counterattack. Senior forward Samantha Verduzco raced down the right sideline with about 45 seconds left and eventually made her way to end line to create a crucial corner with 28 seconds left on the clock.

Verduzco's run gave fellow senior Ashley Ramirez just enough time to get to the corner and deliberately place the ball in Megorden's vacinity at the near post. After the ball crossed the goalline, the Biola bench exploded and nearly ran to join the rest of their teammates at the top of the 18-yard box before Megorden ran over for high fives and more hugs.

The goal capped off a great match for Biola from wire to wire. The Eagles maintained an impressive level of physicality and grit throughout the entire match while BU's backline prohibited the Cardinal from the completing the majority of their passes in front of the goalie's box. CUAA created just three shots-on-goal during the match and did not have any cornerkicks.

Keeper Maria Lulgjuraj was the primary reason the Cardinals were able to push the Eagles to the limit. Lulgjuraj made 10 saves on the night and made a few spectacular plays in the air to punch Biola's shots away from frame.

Christina Rodriguez was just as good when she was called on for saves and prevented Concordia Ann Arbor from taking a lead early in the second half by stuffing a one-v-one shot from 4 yards away. When Samantha Golchuk found an opening on the left side in the 57th minute, Rodriguez charged off her line and trapped the loose ball with one hand to prevent the Cardinals from punching the rebound in.

Friday's win was Rodriguez' seventh-consecutive clean sheet.

The Eagles now have one day to prepare for Indiana Wesleyan in the NCCAA National Championship. The wildcats came into the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and have posted three shutouts to reach the Championship.
