Strong Second Half Keys Win

Biola out-rebounds San Diego Christian 22-7 in half two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was the usual suspects that got the job done for Biola on Thursday night, leading to a come-from-behind 74-65 win over San Diego Christian inside of Chase Gym.

Trevor Treinen, Blake Shannon, Jr., Levi Auble and Alex Talma all scored in double-digits in the win and the leadership of Shannon and Treinen proved critical as the team worked its way out of a deep first-half hole and got the victory.

"Blake did a nice job tonight. He's done a lot of really good things, both Tuesday and tonight," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "He gives us the penetration and makes some big shots. He's really a fine player."

The senior point guard was the driving force in Biola's ability to cut a 13-point Hawks lead 13 minutes in down to one at the halftime break. He had a steal, five points and set up the final bucket of the half with one of his six assists to send the Eagles soaring into the locker room after what had been a noticeably slow start.

"We came out and we were pretty slow, which we did not want to do, especially in front of our home fans," said Shannon. "But we closed out the half well, which gave us a little bit of momentum going into the second half."

San Diego Christian had built their sizable first-half lead off the power of three-point shooting. The Hawks had eight three-point makes in the first 12 minutes and change on 8-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. The hot spot dried up a bit for the Hawks over the course of the rest of the game as they made just four more threes in the final 27 minutes, including zero more during the remainder of the first half.

"We were much more ready to play on Tuesday than we were tonight. We were fortunate to close the game to one point at halftime because they had outplayed us," said Holmquist.

Biola scored the first six points of the second half to take the lead back and never trailed again over the final 19 minutes, 44 seconds.

Rebounding played a huge role in the team's ability to lock in down the stretch. While the Hawks outrebounded BU 14-12 in the first half, the Eagles managed a 22-7 positive rebounding margin in half two to dominate the physicality of the contest.

The Eagles landed with the nine-point lead, but they showed flashes of even better basketball throughout the second half. Unfortunately, they were never able to truly establish a rhythm to pull away by more because 22 fouls were called during the 20 minutes in final period. Both teams managed to avoid having any players foul out, but four players ended the night with four fouls.

Two of the players with four fouls were two of the Eagles' biggest producers of the night. Levi Auble matched his scoring output from Tuesday with 20 points on 8-of-13 (62%) shooting. He leads the team this season with 15.3 points-per-game through these first four outings. Alex Talma once again came close to notching the team's first double-double of the season. He had 13 points and finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

"Levi has been huge," said Shannon. "Everybody on the bench and in the coaching staff has known he's an extremely talented player and I think he's showing it. Our fans love him. He gave them buckets the other night and he gave them buckets again this night, so he's an exciting player."

Finally, Treinen showed up big when it mattered most in this one. He and Shannon both ended with 16 points. Shannon added six assists and Treinen impressed with his 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. He also had three assists and six rebounds.

Biola remains undefeated at home this season with the win and improves to 2-2 overall. The team has the chance to get its first road win of the season on Saturday night out in Riverside. The Eagles play their third game in six days with a 7:00 p.m. contest at La Sierra (0-4).
