Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Got That 'W'

Two near double-doubles and a big start lift Biola to first win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It looks like a little home cooking is all Biola Men's Basketball needed to get back on track early in this 2017-18 season. The Eagles earned a 78-70 win over Antelope Valley on Tuesday evening in its first home game of the new year.

UAV was a tough opponent as they had speed and a lot of athletic players and really pushed an up-tempo offense, which is contrary to Biola's typical style. The Eagles stepped up and got a win over a program that came into the night with a quality win earlier this year over The Master's.

"I was happy to win. I thought we came out ready to play," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "They are quick and athletic and play hard. We had some trouble guarding them. It's a nice win, because we won the game, but it also showed us a lot of things we need to improve on."

Biola got the win thanks in large part to its really hot start. The team shot 80 percent from the field through the first 10 minutes of play and built up a 24-12 win through those first 10 minutes. The Eagles scored the first seven points of the game with four of those points coming from the game's leading scorer, Levi Auble.

"It's awesome to have the win, because it sucks to have all losses on your record," said Auble. "To get one win going into two more games this weekend is huge to build our confidence and get us on a roll."

Auble, in his third game starting as the Eagles' "four," came away with 20 points and nine rebounds while making seven of his 14 shots from the floor. He was the Eagles' biggest offensive threat of the first half, before his buddy Trevor Treinen took over in the second.

It was a relatively dicey second period of play as Biola actually was outscored 46-41 over the final 20 minutes after taking a 37-24 lead into the halftime break.

Antelope Valley turned up the pressure on both ends in that second half, suffocating the Eagles as they attempted to inbound the ball and seemingly never using more than 10 seconds of the shot clock down on the other end.

The Pioneers shot 42 percent in the second half after missing nearly 70 percent of their shots in the first and even had the game back within four with just over eight minutes to go.

Biola was able to extend that lead back out with a Blake Shannon, Jr. three and then a stretch of four consecutive points by Treinen and never really sweat again for the rest of the half.

Treinen had 13 second-half points and 19 total. He shot 60 percent from the field in a game that looked much more like vintage Treinen than the team's first two outings of the year.

Alex Talma was the team's leading rebounder with 12. While Auble was one rebound away from a double-double, Talma ended up one point away from a double-double with his nine on the night. He was ultra efficient, shooting 3-of-5 in his 31 minutes.

"Playing in front of the fans, getting buckets in front of the fans, we know they love that," said Auble. "We just wanted to give them something to look forward to for the rest of the season."

Getting buckets is exactly what the team did, pouring in a season-high 78 points after averaging 57 points-per-game in games one and two of the season.

Biola shot over 50 percent for the game and made double-digit three-point field goals (10) for the first time this season. Treinen's three threes led the way, but Shannon and Talma also had two a piece. Freshman Michael Bagatourian opened the scoring with a big triple to set the tone.

"I think Levi, Blake and Trevor had really good nights," said Holmquist. "We needed everybody to get the win, but I think Blake had to handle the ball a lot against their pressure and did really well and Levi and Trevor made some big shots."

The Eagles improve to 1-2 for the season and are back at home on Thursday evening as they host San Diego Christian (1-3) at 7:00 p.m. The game is the second half of a doubleheader with the women's team who hosts Northwest Nazarene at 5:00 p.m.

"Just come out and bring all your friends to come watch," said Auble. "There's going to be a lot of buckets."
