Lancers Stay Perfect

Eagles give it all they have, but suffer their first sweep of the season.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had a second chance to knock off undefeated No. 2 California Baptist Lancers on Saturday evening. This time the Lancers looked polished and prepared and didn't allow the Eagles to take the five sets and threaten a win, instead CBU spoiled the night for BU with a three-set sweep (13-25, 21-25, 15-25).

It was the first time all season that Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team suffered a three-set loss. The Eagles had been 7-0 in such matches.

Tonight it was just a matter of coming up against a stacked team that performed at its absolute best from start to finish. The Lancers improved to 26-0 this season behind an onslaught that saw them accumulate 48 kills, hit .297, pile on 10 blocks and add six aces.

Biola, for the first time all season, had zero service aces. However, it was also positive the other way around because Seltzer's squad went the whole match with zero service errors too. It's the first time the Eagles have gone a whole match without a service error since Sept. 1, 2012.

The Eagles hit .111 for the match and only committed eight unforced attack errors, which is fewer than CBU's total number of unforced attack errors. Unfortunately for Biola that's because CBU out-blocked BU 10-2.

The second set was the closest contested of the entire match. The Eagles were within two points of the Lancers as late in the set as 23-21, but CBU managed to win the final two points to close it out and help them get a boost of confidence as they sought a sweep in set three.

Hannah Van Warmerdam was the team's leading hitter on Saturday with nine kills. She was also second on the team with a .222 hitting percentage. She was second only to freshman Bekah Roth, who seemingly never has a down match in terms of attack efficiency. Roth finished with six kills and hit .286. Karly Dantuma had seven kills and Savannah Hilde six to round out the team's leading numbers.

The loss is the Eagles' first in the last seven times out. The team is 12-2 in the last 14, with both losses coming to the juggernaut that is CBU. Fortunately for Biola, Azusa Pacific lost in three sets today too, so the teams are still tied for second in the conference at 13-5. The Eagles are now 20-7 overall and have a chance to win the tiebreaker and finish as the second-place team in the conference if they can win out next week.

Biola finishes its regular season schedule with a home match against Fresno Pacific this Friday and Dixie State this Saturday and then it's off to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship next month.
