FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola played things even with the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds in the first half on Saturday. But Fresno Pacific overcame eight yellow cards by the final whistle and scored four times in the second half to defeat Biola, 0-4.
Â
Fresno Pacific pulls itself up to .500 in conference play with the win. The Eagles win at Azusa on Wednesday still means Biola had a good week because it collected three points in two road matches. Head Coach
Todd Elkins' team is 4-5-1, 3-2 PacWest.
Â
Biola probably played slightly better in the first half than the home team. The Eagles showed more discipline with four fouls to the Sunbirds 12 and four yellow cards. And they took the most memorable chance of the first 45 minutes.
Â
Keaton Kerr launched a few rockets at the frame that just sliced a bit off frame to the home team's benefit. Then
Jack Cybulski made a scorching breakaway attempt in the 40th minute only to have the Fresno Pacific keeper layout and keep the ball out of the net with his left foot.
Â
After the halftime break, the Sunbirds began finding their breaking attackers for through-balls and took six shots-on-goal. They scored the first goal of the match ten minutes into the half and found a second for breathing room just five minutes later.
Â
That score did not seem insurmountable with a half hour still remaining in regulation because Biola had scored seven second half goals over its previous two matches. But the Sunbirds added two more goals in the 70
th and 72
nd minutes to earn their second conference victory at home.
Â
The Eagles begin a stretch of three matches in six days when they welcome Hawaii Pacific University to Al Barbour Field this coming Wednesday. Kickoff for the men's match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
