Munivez Provides Late Heroics

Eagles get a 1-0 victory on a game-winner in double overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- This was not a match in which the Eagles pulled away from the Hawaii Pacific Sharks. Biola simply kept itself in the match long enough to finds its goal-scoring chance in double overtime.

Jake Munivez' header on a cornerkick in the 103rd minute gave the Eagles a 1-0 shutout victory and their fourth victory in PacWest play. The Sharks walk away with a 4-5-2 record overall and a 2-5-1 mark in conference.

Biola had to ride its defense for much of the match because HPU was producing the best threats at goal. Thankfully, the Eagles were able to manage everything HPU kicked at them by ensuring that the visitors did not get second chances with their dangerous opportunities.

Igo Puglia made two saves in each half of regulation time and did his best work in the 67th minute on a wide open shot from Gerrit Arzberger. With Arzberger's shot headed toward the far, right post from 13 yards out, Puglia made an excellent diving stop to his right to keep the match scoreless and undercut the momentum the Sharks had been building since the start of the second half.

The Eagles came into overtime with just one shot-on-goal during the first 90 minutes but started to turn the tide in their favor with Aaron Hontucan's shot in the 96th minute. Hontucan's shot sailed high, but his rocked looked good off his foot and helped focus the Eagles' efforts on getting three points in overtime on Wednesday instead of settling for one.

In the second overtime, freshman Jack Cybulski made a strong run down the right sideline to earn that pivotal cornerkick for Biola that would eventually win the match. With six of his teammates inside the 18-yard box, Kousei Mattox sent a screaming bender toward frame that only the six-foot-three-inch Munivez could do something with. The sophomore met the ball at the height of his jump and headed the ball home to the far right post.

It was the first goal of Munivez' collegiate career and gave the Eagles their fourth-straight win at home.

Biola's next match with be this Saturday when it hosts the Chaminade Silverswords in another PacWest fixture. Opening whistle for the men's match in scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
