Eagles Get Ahead, Stay Ahead

Biola gets back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Hawai’i-Hilo.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles came out on top of what was the most physical game they had played all season. Goals from Jarrett Pugh and Jack Cybulski in the second half kept the Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans at arm's length and led to a 3-1 victory for Biola.

Hawai'i-Hilo play drastically better than their record of 0-11 would lead a casual observer to believe. The Eagles had to come with everything they had to get their fifth win in PacWest play and improve to 6-6-1 on the season.

"In general, I am really pleased and I thought this match was a stark contrast to how we played on Saturday," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "Tonight I think we threw caution to the wind and said, 'we're gonna move forward and we're gonna attack in whatever fashion we need to.'"

Both teams came into the match prepared to push the opposition's defense and to take shots at will. The Eagles and Vulcans combined for 44 shots in the contest while Hawai'i-Hilo had a slim advantage in the shot category at halftime (12 to eight).

But it was Biola that had the lead on the scoreboard at the break. A cornerkick sent toward goal by Clayton Mohler resulted in a free scoring opportunity for Biola after a handball in the box. Captain Kousei Mattox stepped up to the penalty spot and put the ball away for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for Biola in the 35th minute. Then the match would only get more intense with what followed.

Three yellow cards were issued between the start of the second half and the second goal of the match. But senior Jarrett Pugh was undeterred by all the roughhousing and converted a great passing combination from the Eagles into a 2-0 lead. Pugh's shot came just 20 minutes into the second half but was already the ninth shot of the period for the Eagles. A service from around the center line by Riley Waldeck was helped along by two touches from Hernan Sotelo before Pugh volleyed it into the back of the net.

The Vulcans brought the score closer with a goal in the 73rd minute to make the score 2-1. But Igor Puglia and the Eagles' defense stepped up in the 15 minutes that followed to save one UHH shot and block two others.

"We had to deal with Hilo playing pretty direct and being good at it," said Elkins. "Their strength was good individual play in attacking third, so our one-v-one defending and our group defending had to be really good. None of us thought this was going to be an easy win, and it wasn't.

Jack Cybulski sealed the win for Biola by adding another goal four minutes before the final whistle. The freshman forward was in the right place at the right time when the UHH backline had a miscue on a pass just in front of the 18-yard box. Cybulski stepped in to take the ball and the rifled a shot from just inside the box to score the first goal of his collegiate career,

The Eagles next match is scheduled for this Saturday. They will travel to Concordia-Irvine for a match that kicks off at 4:00 p.m.
