A Well-Earned Draw

Biola’s discipline and toughness earn it a respectable 0-0 draw in Irvine.

IRVINE, Calif. --- By the time the final whistle had sounded on Saturday, Concordia Irvine and the Biola Eagles had played 110 minutes and were walking off a dark pitch.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team remained steadfast and committed to its game plan the entire match, limiting Concordia Irvine to just three shots-on-goal in a 0-0 draw on the road.

The tie is another result that should give Biola a confidence boost headed into Monday's match with No. 5 California Baptist. CUI came into play Saturday with a 6-0 record at home this season  bolstered by a goal differential of 20-to-2 at Eagles Field. But 110 hard-fought minutes leaves each team with a point and holds them at five wins in PacWest play.

The Eagles in back kit held the home team scoreless largely because it was successful at keeping the opposition in their own half. CUI was limited to just three shots in the first half of regulation and took all their shots from outside the 18-yard box. Biola's stingy brand of defense meant that keeper Igor Puglia only had the occasional, easy save opportunity: Puglia recorded one save in each of the first three periods on Saturday and turned in his fourth clean-sheet in conference play.

Concordia Irvine also gradually settled into a defensive posture of its own as the match progressed. By restricting Biola to six total shots in the final 65 minutes of play, CUI forced the match to go into extra time and caused a new variable to be introduced into the afternoon's contest.

Because Regulation time ended just 20 minutes before sunset in Irvine, the referees and head coaches had to agree that the lack of floodlights at the facility would not impede them from finishing the match.

Play only slowed once because of the increasing darkness. With four minutes left in the second overtime the head referee nearly called the match due to visibility issues before both coaches reaffirmed they were game to continue. Both teams brought the same level of physicality and aggressiveness that characterized the first 90 minutes of the match and traded near chances until the clock finally reached zero in the second overtime.

Biola returns to action on Monday for a home match against California Baptist. The opening whistle of the men's match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
