Eagles Pull Ahead Early

Two first half goals are more than enough for Biola to defeat Chaminade.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola played great defense on Saturday, shutting out the Chaminade Silverswords and making two first-half goals stand very tall in its fourth PacWest victory of the season.

Colie Martin scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the fifth minute of the match and the Eagles limited the Silverswords to just five shots in the match.

"It's good to get another win and three more valuable points in the standings," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "After the Fresno Pacific match we set a goal to win the next three matches at home and we're two thirds of the way there."

The Eagles aggressiveness from the opening whistle paid off almost immediately as Biola collected a cornerkick and two shots within the first five minutes. The home team really raised the pressure as it prepared for its second shot by setting up outside back Colie Martin for a long run toward the 18-yard box.

As the midpoint in a switch of play for Biola, midfielder Hali Oakes swung the ball toward the free space the Silverswords allowed on the left side of the 18-yard box and created a leading pass for Martin to create momentum. The sophomore took a good six to seven strides with the ball before launching it over the keeper's head and inside the far post for a goal.

The Eagles took seven of next eight shots in the match to just kept applying more pressure until Chaminade allowed a second goal.

Following a foul from the visiting team just outside their own 18-yard box in the 35th minute, Paula-Marie Labate initiated yet another set piece for the Eagles and served the ball toward the back post where Margaret Guadarrama was waiting. Guadarrama took three steps toward the top corner of the six-yard box while the ball was in the air and had an easy time giving Biola a 2-0 lead by volleying the ball into the goal off her head.

"We came out with great intensity and bite, which allowed us to pick off a ton of passes and put them on their heels," said Brunelle. "It felt like we dropped off a little bit and weren't as relentless in the second half. But we were also trying to give more players some time and experience that we were not able to in previous games."

Although Biola's shot count dropped from 12 to eight in the second half, it remained scrappy on defense and limited Chaminade to just three shots in the second half. Christina Rodriguez only needed to make one save in the second half, a stop in the 67th minute on a shot from Caitlin Tatemichi, while centerbacks Madyson Brown and Cat Newberry locked things down in front of the 18-yard box.

The Eagles command of the game allowed them to play nine substitutes and conserve minute for a number of key players as they head into a match with Hawai'i-Hilo on Monday. Seven of the starting 11 were able to play fewer than 70 minutes in the victory.

Biola is now 8-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in PacWest play while the Silverswords drop to 3-8 (2-6 PacWest).

Kickoff on Monday with the Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
