Chaminade Scores Late Goal

Biola’s offense is held at bay on Saturday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Chaminade Silverswords became the first PacWest team to defeat the Eagles at home this season. The visitors turned around what was an 0-3 road trip with a goal in the 70th minute that they held for a 1-0 victory.

Biola remains above .500 in conference after the loss, 4-3 PacWest (5-6-1 overall). The Silverswords get their second PacWest victory of the season and improve to 3-6-1 overall.

Early on there was no indication that Saturday's match might turn sour for Biola because it had still won several matches when the Eagles waited to score late.

Both teams kept the other's offense flat throughout the first half as the sides combined for just four shots during the first 29 minutes of the match. But Chaminade just kept sticking around and showed it was going to try to beat Biola at its own game of attrition.

After Biola opened up the second half with two quick shots and a cornerkick, the Silverswords buckled down to take the next five shots over a span of 17 minutes and stayed on their toes to convert the match's only real chance at a goal.

In the 70th minute a loose ball in front of the Eagles' backline was picked up by Nick Kraus with a running lane ahead of him. Kraus beat one challenger and pushed the ball passed a charging Igor Puglia to tuck the ball inside the right post.

Head Coach Todd Elkins sent the majority of his formation upfield with 10 minutes left to push for the equalizer. But the Eagles could only manufacture two shots after Silverswords' goal and suffered their first loss at home in conference play.

The Eagles have a chance to rebound almost immediately with a match on Monday. They face off with the Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans at 7:00 p.m.
