Rapid Reversal

Biola scores two quick goal to turn a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 victory.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was not until the second half that Biola really started to play the type of soccer it really intends to play. But the Eagles found a spark off their bench and scored two goals in a span of three minutes to defeat Dominican University, 3-2.

"It was pretty night and day, first half to second half," said Erin Brunelle. "There were some mistakes we made early on that took awhile to get sorted out. We had a good response and continued to put good pressure on them offensively."

Biola remains undefeated at home this season after the win and improves to 6-1 (2-1 PacWest). The Penguins fall to 3-5-1 (1-3 PacWest) after dropping both matches of this week's road trip to Southern California.

The match began with a fortunate turn for the visiting team. The Penguins took the lead just 45 seconds into the contest on an own goal from the Eagles after a botched attempt to clear a cross.

To Biola's relief, senior midfielder Ashley Ramirez set up Paula-Marie Labate for a breakaway equalizer just eight minutes later. Ramirez one-touched a winding ball over the Penguins backline and put the perfect measure of slice on it for Labate to pick up the ball in stride toward goal. The sophomore beat the keeper one-on-one and tucked the ball inside the left post for her second goal of the season.

At that point one might have thought the Eagles would be running downhill after Labate's goal and have a chance at putting the match away after the first half. But Dominican did a great job of buckling down and preventing the Eagles from moving the ball into the offensive third of the pitch.

The Penguins finished off the first half with a quick strike from Ivy Torres to take a 2-1 lead into the break. But the Eagles came up roses with its halftime adjustments again, limiting the Penguins to six shots in the second half while they took 10.

Six of Biola's shots in the second half belonged to the Eagles' two goal scorers, Margaret Guadarrama and Madi deMetropolis. Both Guadarrama and deMetropolis played in the most pivotal minutes of the match for Biola and brought the grit and aggressiveness the Eagles needed to climb back in.

"Madi has been gaining a lot of confidence with the minutes she has been getting and she also served a really great ball into Margaret in the box," said Brunelle. "[Guadarrama] is special inside the 18-yard box, so to find her use the talent God gave her there was a great response to our missed penalty and really lifted more confidence in the team."

Guadarrama provided the equalizer in the 64th minute on a beautiful two-touch strike that she deposited in the upper left corner of the frame. After deMetropolis served it into her around the top of the 18-yard box, Guadarrama took a moment to control the ball with her chest, let it bounce and then stuck the ball with her right foot for her first goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, deMetropolis put the final squeeze on the Eagles' grip on the match with a goal of her own on a header. Converting a service made by Samantha Verduzco at the end of her run to the corner flag, deMetropolis scored a well-deserved goal for how much she was pushing the Eagles' offense in the second half.

"We were tied 2-2 and none of us wanted to go into overtime," said deMetropolis. "When Sam got to the ball, I tried to give it that extra bit of effort again to get to the right spot because I knew [that effort] would pay off eventually."

The Eagles next match will be against Azusa Pacific in Azusa on Wednesday evening. Kickoff in the next installment of the Cornerstone Cup in scheduled for 5:00 p.m
